Edward looks different because he has scissor hands and everyone else has normal hands. Edward once said "people are afraid of me because I'm different." However, just like everyone else he wants to be liked and feel love. He wants to his scissor hands to do good things like cutting his hedges into animal shapes and cutting people's and dog's hair. This movie shows that the appearances of people don't always match their personalities.
