When he was young, he worked as a squire for a knight. A squire was someone who took care of a knight's horses and armor. Also, the knight taught him how to fight. Ponce de Leon joined Columbus on his second voyage. He was given a lot of land for his work. After this, de Leon decided to become an explorer. In 1506, de Leon sailed to Puerto Rico. Two years later, he claimed the land for Spain. In 1513, the king of Spain paid for an expedition for de Leon discovered a land with lots of flowers, plants, and fierce natives. Ponce de Leon called it "Pascua Florida,"which means "Festival of Flowers." Ponce de Leon thought it was an island, but it was actually the state we know as Florida. de Leon also discovered the Gulf Stream Current, which would help future Spanish ships get home. de Leon went back to Spain and told the king.
