Have clear goals and instruct the SPTA of those goals before, during, and after. Making sure changes in status are abundantly clear. Having strong verbal nonverbal communication skills i.e documentation. Strong interdisciplinary communication between healthcare providers. Flexibility but consistency with the POC because things change and constantly evolve. Be on the same page when it comes to patient education, HEPs, and so on to keep everything consistent. Having mutual respect and maintaining and open line of communication for feedback. Know what is within each clinician's scope of practice - don't put them in a position that will set them up for failure. Know each other's strengths and weaknesses.

Direct communication between the DPT and PTA is also helpful to keep everyone on the same page in terms of progression, patient status, and recognizing potential noteworthy changes.


Understanding the strengths of PTAs and ensuring the DPT is not asking them to carry out interventions outside their scope of practice.


Openness to feedback for both DPTs and PTAs. Nobody is perfect, so being respectful and coachable is essential for high quality patient care.


Patients often see different DPTs or PTAs depending on scheduling, so ensuring the plan of care is consistent and all faculty are effectively communicating is key.

Although PTs are responsible for the eval/re-eval, PTs and PTAs will work with the patient throughout the plan of care. If a PTA is working closely with a patient and the patient is reporting adverse symptoms or something is not working with the plan of care, the PTA and PT can work together to benefit that patient to help them meet their goals.


We also discussed having an understanding/professional relationship between the PT/PTA; if the PT/PTA have effective communication and a great relationship, the team will be more efficient and effective in treating patients and have a more positive and team environment, collaboration, respect of everyone's ideas
