Hi Eileen,

I really appreciate the important time you spend with students actually getting deep into texts and doing rhetorical analysis with them. It's clear that you spend time reading texts closely and are able to model that for students.
This approach will heighten their awareness of the tools available to them as writers-- and scaffolds their writing.

--Lisa

I love imitation writing and you've perfectly captured how to use it in a classroom to get students to understand writer's craft and produce writing that others want to read! Loved every minute of it! Thanks for all of the great resources.

Thank you for sharing! There was a lot of information and a lot crammed into one hour, but I love all of the examples of essays in the real world. When my 9th grade students hear essay, they think one type of essay. I'd love to challenge their idea of essay by using some of these pieces.

Eileen, my brain is full! How dare you do this to me before I present! Joking aside, this was so informative and can really boost students' awareness of genre, audience, and purpose. It challenges even the most advanced students but the delivery begins in manageable chunks with excellent modeling on your part. I appreciate the text abundance and references. It's clear you have been doing this a long time and have meaningful readings to move students to action! Thank you. --Daina

You passion for the subject comes through with force! There is a lot of meat on this activity, and an hour was a hard timeframe to fit it into, but you did it! Two things are apparent, throughout. One is that you have incredibly high expectations for your students. They are challenged and supported and you push them, and that is awesome! The other is your wonderfully wordy banter. You made receiving a ton of ideas very easy, fun and engaging. Your students must really appreciate it! The modes and structures hand out was also very useful.

I will need to soak it up again!

Lots of great suggestions for mentor texts.
I can tell your enthusiasm for learning comes across to your students.
Keep teaching sister!
Brooke
