Colonists formed  secret societies called "sons of liberty" in places like New York and Massachusetts. They used violence to scare tax collectors. The largest group was in Boston. A lot of buisnesses refused to buy stamps. Patrick Henry gave speeches about how the Stamp Act violated their basic rights. The Colonies reacted to the Sugar Act with protests and rebelling. Colonial merchants complained that taxes hurt their business. The Sugar Act helped create the slogan: “ No Taxation without Representation”.

  • Boston Harbor was closed until Boston paid for the lost tea.
  • The Massachusetts charter was cancelled.  The governor decided if and when the legislature could meet.  Town meetings were also disallowed.
  • Royal officials accused of crimes were sent to Britain for trial.  This let them face a more friendly judge and jury.
  • The Quartering Act forced colonists to quarter, or house and supply, British soldiers.
  • General Thomas Gage became the new governor of Massachusetts, effectively creating military rule in Massachusetts.

It caused a great decline in the rum business and reduced the market to only some colonies could sell certain things.
