Essential Question 1: Childhood
The technique of facial expressions demonstrates the essential question through her adult view of the revolution. The facial expressions of boredom and sadness mixed with the jumbled nature of the people on the bike show how she sees the revolution as an adult. One that would bring her country backwards towards religious oppression and sexist laws.
Graphic Novel Elements
The graphic element of Faces is very present in the slide with most of the people on the “wheels of revolution” show sadness and indifference hinting at how this will affect the post revolution. The post revolution was dictated by not enough people fighting back but giving up or simply not caring enough to fight the new wave of oppression.

Essential Question: Beliefs
The use of graphic weight is used in relation to Marji’s loss of faith in god by the visual weight and contrast of space. She uses the drawing mixed with her floating to show her lack of anchor in the world.
Graphic Weight
The use of graphic weight adds a tone of seriousness mixed with the darkness to show the evil growing in her part of the world. It could be symbolism of light in the darkness with her morals being unique and righteous in a darker and darker world with twisted religious oppression.

Essential Question 1: Growing Up
The use of caption bubbles to evoke emotion heavily relates to the the ideas of growing up and changing. Marjane’s mother is a prime example of of this as seen with the spiked bubble to give the reader a visual idea of someone yelling. This changes marjane greatly because her mother is trying to tell her just how important her rare education is compared to all those who are unable to get one.
Graphic Novel Element
The use of caption bubbles is used throughout Persepolis as a tool to evoke loud noises or yelling. Marjane’s mother uses it when she is arguing with marjane for skipping classes and acting very childish. It’s also a very popular tool used in comics in a similar fashion.

She looks at god with an accusatory stare because she blames him for her uncle's death. This can be used to represent the essential question #2. Marjane is confused and sad and frustrated and she gets mad at go

Essential question 4: Beliefs
The essential question about beliefs is seen in this panel because Marjane is telling us what she wanted to be and is directly relating herself to god. She is talking about who she looks up to and what she believes in because she wanted to be a model of that.

The author uses her hands to represent what she wanted to be and what she believes in. Like for justice, she is holding a balance in her hand, for love, she's making a peace sign with her hands to show love. And for the wrath of god, she is holding weapons. All these together in one panel makes for a good visual of what she believes and how she wanted to looked at

Essential question 2:
The graphic weight of this graphic is directed towards the three children with nails between their fingers and then to Ramin cowering behind the tree. The children feel that they must punish Ramin for the actions of his father. They feel that they have to do this because of the common belief of the culture to support aspects of life contrary to the shah. His dad was a member of the secret police so they felt compelled by the values of society to to do something. This is a great example of balancing the demands and requirements of society with personal beliefs. The graphic weight of this panel reveals what the popular opinion is against those with the shah.

Essential question #1: In this panel it shows that in their society people can't be their true self. They can't express themselves with clothes or music or evening partying (modern things). They balanced the harsh demands of society by, Marjane who left for more freedom and so she can be her true self while receiving a good education as well.

Graphic novel element: In this panel Marjane parents are in the foreground and it shows how sad they are for leaving their daughter, Marjane mom can’t walk because she’s said. In the mid ground it shows people who look confused about why a women is being carried. Then in the background is Marjane who is even more shocked and saddened at the sight of her mother being carried away in sorrow by her father.
