The Soviet Union did advance in technology despite their economic problems. Military technology was advancing quickly. Ballistic missiles were created and could be launched. Also nuclear weapons were created. One of the Soviet Union's greatest achievements was the creation of the first satellite Sputnik. It was launched into space in 1957 and orbited the earth at about 18,000 mph.

The Soviet Union was huge. It had an area of 8,649,000 square miles and consisted of 262,000,000 people. Compared to the U.S. Russia had great economical, educational, and health problems. People made an average income of only $2,600 dollars compared to the U.S. where an average income was $12,530 dollars. In the year 1915 a tiny amount of people (25%) were illiterate. However, that percentage increased to 99% by the year 1980. The life expectancy rates in the Soviet Union were lower than the U.S and there were more physicians per 100,000 people. The cost of normal goods were more expensive and the Soviet Union's gross national product was also about half the size of the U.S. The Soviet Union was the number one manafacuter for steel, cotton, wheat, sugar, alumninnum, gold, and oil.

The Soviet Union have won 115 more medals than the US between 1952 -1988 in the Olympics . The Cold War tensions led the US to boycott the Olympics in Moscow and the Soviet Union to boycott in 1984 in Los Angeles . The great success that the Soviet Union had in the Olympics was because of their talented athletes . Two of them are Weight lifter Vasily Alexyev and Gymnast Olga Korbut both gold medal winners in 1972 Olympics in Munich , Germany. If it was the 20th century the Soviet should emphasize their success on their sports because they were so dominant and dominated U.S. by medals.

The first Soviet satellite to travel in space was the Sputnik, it was launched on October 5, 1957. The first Soviet male cosmonaut was Yuri Gagarin and the first female was Valentina Tereshkova. The English translation of the caption of the Soviet space poster is "fatherland". The caption expresses that they are the first to go above the earth . Soviet should consider the Soviet achievements in space if they had to emphasize it in a chapter book because they launched the first artifical satellite in into space and they had a dog named Laika go into space and he was the first one. Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova were the first male and female to orbit the earth and travel it.
