The Soviet Union did advance in technology despite their economic problems. Military technology was advancing quickly. Ballistic missiles were created and could be launched. Also nuclear weapons were created. One of the Soviet Union's greatest achievements was the creation of the first satellite Sputnik. It was launched into space in 1957 and orbited the earth at about 18,000 mph.

However, that percentage increased to 99% by the year 1980. The life expectancy rates in the Soviet Union were lower than the U.S and there were more physicians per 100,000 people. The cost of normal goods were more expensive and the Soviet Union's gross national product was also about half the size of the U.S. The Soviet Union was the number one manafacuter for steel, cotton, wheat, sugar, alumninnum, gold, and oil.

The Cold War tensions led the US to boycott the Olympics in Moscow and the Soviet Union to boycott in 1984 in Los Angeles . The great success that the Soviet Union had in the Olympics was because of their talented athletes . Two of them are Weight lifter Vasily Alexyev and Gymnast Olga Korbut both gold medal winners in 1972 Olympics in Munich , Germany. If it was the 20th century the Soviet should emphasize their success on their sports because they were so dominant and dominated U.S. by medals.
