         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>* </strong>A pose of a formal argument is to make readers believe something formal argument states a position on a substance and then supports that position with reasons and evidence. The pung and, in many cases, to take some type of action.<br><br><strong><em>Any of these ideas might be presented as an argument.</em></strong></div><ul><li>You want your parents to let you try o for a co-ed ice hockey team.</li><li>The state wants to pass a stricter law for skateboarders and bike riders.</li></ul><div><br><strong>* WHAT MAKES A GOOD ARGUMENT</strong></div><ul><li>shows an understanding of the issues.</li><li>includes a precise claim that states the writer's position. (thesis)</li><li>provides logical reasons to writer's claim.</li><li>supports reasons with sufficient and relevant evidence.</li><li>organizes reasons and evidence logically.</li><li>fairly and respectfully argues against opposing points of view.</li><li>clearly shows relationships between ideas.</li><li>has a formal style and confident tone.</li><li>&nbsp;concludes with a restatement of the claim.</li></ul><div><br><strong>~Claim</strong> - a writer position on a problem or issue</div><ul><li>direct and to the point</li><li>should make only one main point</li><li>should be repeated in the concluding paragraph</li></ul><div><br><strong>*Support and reasons<br>~Support</strong> - a material that is used to prove a claim. <br><strong>~Reason</strong> - a statement that explains to readers why they should believe your claim.<br><strong>~Evidence</strong> - proof that supports your reason<br><strong>~Facts</strong> - statements that can be proven<br><strong>~Statistic</strong> - facts stated in numbers<br><strong>~Quotations</strong> - when you are directly quoting someone<br><strong>~</strong> <strong>Anecdotes</strong> - a brief story or accounts of events that prove a point.<br><strong>~Conclusion</strong> - to come together <br><strong>~Syntax</strong> - order of your sentence <br><strong>~Emotional</strong> <strong>Appeal</strong> - appeal to your emotional <br><strong>~Snob</strong> <strong>Appeal</strong> - refers to the qualities or attributes of a product that might appeal to a consumer with "snobby" tastes.<br><br><strong>*Formal vs informal</strong></div><ul><li>no abbreviations</li><li>no slang</li><li>avoid offending readers with wrong tone and or words.</li><li>help your reader focus on the idea of your story</li><li>avoid contractions</li><li>do not address the reader directly</li></ul><div><br>*<strong>What makes a strong conclusion</strong></div><ul><li>logical follow up to your main ideas presented in the body argument</li><li>restate your argument</li><li>when appropriate, include a call to action (asking readers to believe in something in sending or to do something).</li><li>tie up any loose ends</li><li>my point out a new, interesting idea closely related to the claim that leaves readers with something to think about (without going off topic).</li></ul>]]></description>
