This name comes from the myth that he was already a wise old man with white hair when he was born. Very little is known about Lao-tzu’s life, so it isn’t exactly known weather he was actually ever alive. Lao-tzu left his home in Luoyang to live alone beyond the Great Wall of China. While he was leaving, the gate keeper asked him to write down his final thoughts.  Lao-tzu said he would a returned 3 days later with a small book. After that he was never heard from again.
