This quote is from the first page of the Prologue and it is significant because he describes Ethan Frome's physical state and features. Based on the quote we can conclude that his appearance is somewhat bleak/depressing or dreary and it's unapproachable/not friendly. We can also conclude that his body is scrunched up in a stiff way and he moves a little stiff. This quote is from page 2 and it is foreshadowing of why he is still in Starkfeild and the reason why he hasn't gotten away yet. It also gives us some information and tell us that the "smash up" is an important part in the book.

Then Harmon Gow suggested that Ethan Frome's bay was still on his legs and that his owner might be glad to drive me over.

I stared at the suggestion. “Ethan Frome? But I've never even spoken to him. Why on earth should he put himself out for me?”

Harmon's answer surprised me still more. “I don't know as he would; but I know he wouldn't be sorry to earn a dollar.”
This series of dialogue between the narrator and Harman Gow show us some key things about Ethan Frome, one thing is that he is a hard worker and is willing to do anything for pay since he is poor. The second thing being that he is very kind and treats all people the same.
