i think a dominant theme in this play is "the importance of family". as we see, the family faces many hardships like poverty and racism. we also see, however that they get past these hardships as they all move through them together. a part in the text that supports this is on page 145, when mama says "There is always something left to love. And if you ain't learned that, you ain't learned nothing." this quote shows that mama understands the importance of the love of family even after facing challenges, in this case, the fact that walter lost his money to willy. she is showing beneatha, as well as the audience, that they can only move through if they love and support each other.

I think a dominant theme would be resilience. This goes along with what the inner circle is talking about - as Roah said, the light at the end of the tunnel. This is shown in the play by how despite the many hardships that the family faced (such as Walter Sn.'s death and Walter losing the money), the Younger's finally got the money to move out. On page 44, Mama talks about how she had not intended to live in the apartment for more than a year. ("Hadn't been married 2 weeks and wasn't planning on living here for more than a year.") However, many hardships came up and they did not have the money to move into a better place. Despite this, the family never gave up on their dreams to move out of the apartment, and the play ends off with them moving out into a better house.

There could be many dominant themes in A Raisin In The Sun. I think that a dominant theme in this book is the need to fight off racial discrimination. When Mr. Linder first comes to their house he starts off being very supportive of blacks and he was extremely nice to them. He then flat out tells them they are not wanted. The family does not take this lightly and kicks him out. On page 148 Walter counters to Mr. Linder and tells him "And we have decided to move into our house because my father- my father he earned it for us brick by brick...we don't want your money..." Racial discrimination was going on all the time in the 1950's and Walter stood up for his family and they bought the house.

Mama's plant has been with her through it all. This is also shown when walter loses the money, then working to earn it back. In the text they face many obstaccles and hardships throughout the text, for example when willy steals the money.

I think the theme is never give up on your dreams. I believe this because there are several points in the book that support this theme. One of the points in the book is that everyone of the family members has their own dream and they never gave up on it. For example mama has her plant, the plant represents all the family has been through. It also represents mamas dream of having a garden.

I think that Mama helped to show this positivity as she always remains hopeful and is a pillar of strength for the family. This is shown on page 139 when she says "Lord, that Lena Eggleston is a high-minded thing" this helps to shoe that she always aimed high and stayed positive through the tough times, showing the positive outlook that is shown in the no

For instance, Beneatha is more positive when trying to persue being a docter, on page 36, " I disected something that looked just like you yesterday..." which shows she is proud to become a docter.

I agree with Truitt, I belive the play presents a more negative view on life, that it doesn't put sugar on everything, they show what can actually happen in real life. When Ruth said she wanted to get and abortion, Walter got angry but didn't do anything. Page 125 to 130, Walter lost the money that was supposed to be used for Beneatha and him. This basically creates a negative mood where the important things have been lost.

Mama's plant was described to be limp and without life. Meaning it was almost or really dead. But Mama treats it as if it were alive. Mama said she will make sure her plant won't get hurt on the way to the new house. Even though it is technically dead she feeds it sunlight and water, she also despite Ruth and Beneatha's wishes is bringing it to the new house also. This is an example of how the plant symbolizes life. Yes her husband is sadly gone, the plant in her mind isn't. She cares for it as if it were her child, and she does everything she can to keep it alive. As if she were trying to bring someone back. And since her husband is dead, she might be using the plant to cover the hole her husband used to fill. If this is the case, the story is much more sadder than it appears to be.

For example, the plant doesn't get that much sunlight and much love from other family members then Mama, it still fights to be recognized and be alive. In the text it says, "Mama-' Like this little old plant that ain't never had enough sunshine or nothing- and look at it..." shows that it still tries to stay alive. Also, it shows that you shouldn't give up you dreams and love others is because the plant still fights to stay alive and eventually it got its life back living in a new garden. You aren't expressed by how beautiful or rich you are, you are expressed by what is on the inside. Mama says "It expresses me!" The plant shows Mama how much she has persevered, just like the plant, and how even though she is different she is still beautiful on the inside.

Mama's plant symbolizes how her dream house was a "dream" to her almost but she didn't give up on it, she didn't let it go, and got the house. This is relevant to my theme because, my theme states that even if you're the only one believing in yourself, never give up. She didn't give up the plant, and still believed in it and feed it sunlight and water through the family's misfortune, and even if she is the only one who wants it. The plant is basically not really a plant to her. She might think of it as something to take of, care for, or even nurture. She could even call it a family member, or child of hers. On the last pages of the book Mama, and all of the other characters in the story are moving out of their old apartment and are moving into their new house. Mama brings the plant with her, which proves that she cares for it to make sure it doesn't die, and live the rare life that no one believed in except Mama.

There are a lot of communities in the US that still use the practice where families of a specific ethnicity stay in one place just together. Like what Mr. Lindner said,"...Negro families are happier when they live live in their own communities." This is still a thing whrer Baltimore has a high community of African-American and Hereford has a low community. This has been a practice that everyone else just went with and not really questioned it.

i think that for most of the play, a negative way of life is portrayed. for example, the event that creates major tension and forms a climax is the fact that walter loses his money to willy. the characters react to this in agony and shock. we can see in page 129 that mama is so distressed as to say "... I seen him [Walter Sr.] grow thin and old before he was forty... working and working and working like somebody's work horse... killing himself... and you --you give it all away in a day--". this line by mama not only shows the negative result of walter's decision to invest the money on willy, but also the sadness of depending on money for happiness. the constant lack of resources has made walter and his family very attached to the idea of having money. i think walter is the character that most displays this negative way of life. in the beginning, he is infatuated with a dream of suddenly opening a liquor store (which in itself is something that suggests he may not be very reliable), however this dream is destroyed when his arrogance is proved with him never having thought about possibilities like willy taking the money.

I'm going to be a docter and George still thinks that's pretty funny." This supports the fact of the negative veiwpoint.

For Example, Walter says "That's sad too -- Everything is sad".(pg.105) Another Example on the same page, Walter says "Today I just walked. All over the south side. And I looked at the Negroes and they looked at me... And then I went to the Green hat. You all sad? You all depressed?". I believe that sometimes the family try to be positive and optimistic to life, but when they come back to their own reality they sink low to the ground. Walter is the best character that articulates this viewpoint. Having a tough life, and trying to be optimistic, must be very hard and the characters should have credit for that.

i think issues like poverty and racism presented in the book are relevant to society nowadays. we can tell the family is living in harsh conditions from the very first page of the book. hansberry states "... [The furnishings] had to accommodate the living of too many people for too many years---and they are tired." this statement suggests that the family has been living in the house for a long time, because they had no other place to go. ruth, getting ready to move out of the house with the family, is extremely happy and says "Well---well!---All I can say is---if this is my time in life---MY TIME---to say good-bye---to these goddamn cracking walls!---and these marching roaches---and this cramped little closet which ain't now or never no kitchen! ...then I say it loud and good, HALLELUJAH! AND GOOD-BYE MISERY..." . this shows the reader how happy a person living in that house would be if they were offered the opportunity to move out. as for racism, the talk with lindner is clearly offensive and holds a menacing message. when he says "you just can't force people to change their hearts" to walter, he is implying that no matter how hard the family tries to fit in, they will never be accepted. segregation is illegal, thankfully, however some people refuse to adapt to the idea that it is immoral and unethical.
