in just seconds we are able to capture every moment and share it on line.

 

On first viewing of this photograph, I assumed that it depicted a scene of a two men taking a child to a party. On closer examination, I realised, with the help of some accompanying text, that this was a scene showing a family going back to their apartment ruined by bombing to try and salvage some belongings. The scene is from the war in Syria and my deeper understanding of the situation made me realise that this was a scene of tragedy not celebration. The contrast of light and dark became, with my enhanced understanding of the situation, a intimation of the shadow of the valley of death. Apart from this rather bleak impression, I was also struck by the resilience of these people trying to pick up the pieces of their lives and carry on in a catastrophic war situation. 

 

This is a view of the towpath of the Grand Union Canal with the A40 Westway swinging over the top of it and Erno Goldfinger’s famous Trellick Tower in the distance. 

This image is a celebration of the ‘terrible beauty’ of 1960s architecture and urban planning because not only does it have one of the most notorious examples of the Brutalist architecture of that period but it also has one of the great London road projects that planners were so keen to build back then.
