Jackson is referencing disease in this quote which is killing off the Native Americans, this is due to the fact that the Americans brought many diseases and bacteria that the Native Americans had never been exposed to. Since the Native Americans had never been exposed to these diseases and bacteria, their immune systems were not able to handle it and something like the common cold was able to kill them.
