The tools you would need would be a material of metal, squeegee strips, a steel etching needle and acid to dip the final piece into it to stop the lines from smearing.

What uses they have today and throughout history: Glasses are one of the main uses of etching today to create designs on them which people have also been using throughout history.

Each day the press room works with advertising determining the book structure, the page counts,
and then they make the press ready for that night’s run. They need to know the sizes of the newspaper and how long it will be able to go on for, for example; ¾ roll is 3 pages wide , 36 inches, weighs 1144 pounds. 114 pounds of the weight is in the outside 1 inch diameter, so ½ an inch of damage is going to be about £60 of newsprint damaged. The engraving process of newspaper printing involves a proof, a plate and in the process of making the plate the system will determine how much ink will be needed. They do not shut down to change rolls, it is a continuous process, each roll weighs about 1500
pounds. Belt comes down and brings incoming roll up to the same speed as the press. When speed is matched, light comes on. Transition tangent, while reels are changing, makes process slightly unstable, any registration issues likely to have happened during this process, about 4800 copies an hour are made.

For the process of printing books you would need to do a quality check, proof read the book to make sure there's no spelling mistakes or punctuality mistakes. Check for the correct dimensions, need to be careful of the quality of images, to make sure it is the right resolution. Digital machines are used to print books, they do printing, cutting, binding and laminating. This is to preserve the quality of image and to make the life of the book longer. When covers have finished laminating and pages have been printed, each of the books are machine cut to be put together. It can be possible to print, laminate and bind at least an order of 24 books to be shipped out within 48 hours.

Review on Work

Skills & Knowledge: The skills and knowledge needed for potato printing is patience, this is because cutting and shaping an image onto a potato can be really tricky work.

Costs: For the whole of my equipment that I needed for potato printing I spent just under £10. Most of the essentials needed you could get around the house, the other products needed could be found any where and for a cheap price too, like at poundland or wilko.

Speed: It is a time consuming skill potato printing as there are a few steps to follow. Also the process of carving/cutting an image onto the potato would need to be done carefully and in its own time to get the best and clearest image produced.

Any Technical considerations: Yes you would have to consider the drying time of the finished product. Also the amount of equipment you would need, especially the amount of potatoes due to how many times you may need to redo it.

What uses they have today & through history: T-shirt printing is one of the most popular ones for potato printing which has been used for many years now. It can be a reliable process and mostly has good feedback from customers.
