John will not let his wife fall for the mistakes he has made in the past, he feels guilt. The court physically examined Elizabeth, it could not find any sign to prove her pregnancy. Danforth doesn't immediately believe that she is telling the truth, but she is. John Proctor is also hesitant to believe it but then he tells Danforth that she "will never lie."
