What these acronyms stand for?</li></ol><div>SDAIE: Specifically Designed Academic Instruction in Enlish<br>BICS: Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills<br>CALP: Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency<br>In Italy you will be the Italian language learner. Identify 3 things that teachers could do to support your language learning (be specific).<br>- The teacher could support my langauge learning through an interactive aprroach.<br>-  The teacher would also support my language learning through direct instruction.<br>- The teacher would support my language learning through provide opportunities for me as a learner to have authentic language experiences.<br><br></div><ol><li>Based on Table 1, what is your level of oral language proficiency in Italian and how will you communicate with your family and in schools?</li></ol><div>Based on Table 1, my level of oral language proficiency in Italian is Early Intermediate. I will communicate with my family in schools by using what I have learned (phrases and words) as well as referencing to my English to Italian language booklet. I want to do my best to speak Italian as often as possible, to fully immerse myself in the language.<br><br></div><ol><li>What are some Italian words/phrases you might need to communicate with your family?</li></ol><div>Italian words/phrases I might need to communicate with my family are basic needs words, such as food and restroom, phrases that include asking how the family is doing and responding to questions as such, and greetings/polite responses (such as please and thank you).<br><br></div><ol><li>What are some words/phrases you might need to understand rules and routines in school?</li></ol><div>Words/phrases I might need to understand rules and routines in school are words such as please and thank you, words that have to do with the daily schedule, and words that go along with kids emotions, to ensure they are feeling safe and respected (such as happy and angry)</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>What does Research Say about Effective Practices for English Learners?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Why is it important for teachers to consider a student’s receptive and expressive language?</li></ol><div>Teacher need to consider a student's receptive and expressive language so that they can be integral parts of the classroom community without feeling as though their language is a barrier. This way they can answer questions, participate in discussions, as well as being successful at showing what they know on assessments.<br><br></div><ol><li>What is meant by “comprehensive input”?</li></ol><div>Comprehensive input are strategies that enable ELLs to understand the essence of a lesson by means of context or visual cues, clarification and building background knowledge that draws on students' experiences. Basically, ELLs, or anyone who is learning a second language, uses prior knowledge to help keep up with language.&nbsp;<br><br></div><ol><li>Look at the table on page 65, do you know any of the key words in the sentences frames (e.g., both___and___are/have____) in Italian?</li></ol><div>I do not know the word for <em>both</em> in Italian. I do know that the word <em>and</em> is e and to <em>have</em> is <em>avere</em>.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>You are on a job interview. The principal see on your resume that you have studied abroad. He/she asked what you learned that will help you as a teacher. Identify 3 instructional practices that you might use to support ELLs in your futures classes (be specific).</li></ol><div>Three instructional practices that I might use to support ELLs in my future classes are having clear instruction and expectations, lots of ways to learn, such as visuals and hands on learning, and incorporating additional resources and availability to access repetition in the work and/or instruction.<br><br></div><ol><li>During the first week we are in Italy, our Italian colleagues will provide guidance for how to teach English to Italian students. Identify 3 instructional practices that you might use to help teach English to students in Italy.&nbsp;</li></ol><div>Three instructional practices that I might use to help teach English to students in Italy are clarifying different words/phrases in Italian (to my best knowledge), teach the most I can in a primary language before teaching in English, and focus on similarities and differences between the languages.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Best Practices in Working with Linguistically Diverse Families.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>What is meant by “funds of knowledge” and how might it be used to support student learning?</li></ol><div>Funds of KNowledge is defined as constitute knowledge that is learned at home through students' interactions with other individuals. This can be used to support student learning by taking what they know, their interests, and what motivates them and bringing that into lessons where students are able to reach their full potential by meeting their needs.</div><ol><li>What is meant by “deficit thinking” and how does it undermine student learning?</li></ol><div>Deficit thinking is defined as the notion that students fail in school because such students and their families experience deficiencies that obstruct the learning process. This undermines student learning because the teacher does not recognize the student's full potential, therefore, they may set goals that do not attest to their abilities.</div><ol><li>What is meant by “culturally relevant thinking” and does it support student learning?</li></ol><div>Culturally relevant thinking is the idea that teachers cannot underestimate the importance of incorporating the lives of the students in the classroom. IT supports student learning by taking into account what each student likes and tries to accomodate lessons to these interests.</div><ol><li>What are some implications of parents not attending school in the US and what might be done to support parents and their children?</li></ol><div>Some implications of parents not attending school in the US are parents being unfamiliar with everyday transactions. Some parents may not question their child's teacher and school because it is unprofessional to do so. Supports can be offered to parents and their children through orientations or family workshops through the school. With this in mind, the school and teachers must always listen to the parents' concerns and ideas, as they are the ones who need to feel comforted in this type of setting.
