He was in wars. When his father died, the land his father ruled was split between him and his brother. He was tought political skills at a really young age. Conquered land/thrones. The distinguishing mark of Charlemagne’s reign was his effort to honour the age-old customs and expectations of Frankish kingship while responding creatively to the new forces impinging on society. His personal qualities helped. He recieved only an elementary school level of education. The first three decades of Charlemagne’s reign were dominated by military campaigns.
