This is a lovely story about sustainability, the importance of taking care of our Earth, and the dangers of pollution. We read it in Year 3 during Destination Reader lessons. It linked to our topics on rainforests and deforestation.

Year 5 clothing swap/mending workshop

In year five, for our Stunning Start we help a special clothing swap and workshop for parents and children. We showed the children how to mend small holes in their clothes and how to attach buttons.

Our Junior School students embarked on a wonderful whole school adventure to DongShan. The event was organised as an opportunity for the children to connect with nature and learn about one of the vibrant communities within Suzhou. We chose this way to celebrate Earth day to show the children some of the beautiful things that can be found on our doorstep and to cultivate a love for the world and communities around them. As part of the trip, the children took litter pickers so we could leave the area even more lovely than how we found it. Each group was able to enjoy different aspects of what DongShan had to offer: Some learned about Dong Shan from the museum, art and sculpture gardens and had the chance to try their hand at tea-picking.

Library - Lending Books

Students are encouraged to use a library book bag to prolong the life of the books.

New purchases are not covered in plastics, in consideration of post circulation disposal and break down.

Y6 Balanced argument - Whose lives matter more topic

Students learn how to write balanced arguments; research and investigate different areas of human-animal interactions and discuss the leading question: Whose lives matter more: humans or other animals. This enables students to delve into an area of interest and identify key areas that humans have impact on animals and consider how we may need to change to help the animals more than ourselves.

In Term 1 of Art CCA, we were inspired by the Sustainability Goals, particularly "Life under water." We created artworks for an exciting exhibition that showcased the beauty and importance of underwater life. During the exhibition, we invited students' parents to join us for a watercolour workshop. Our aim was to raise awareness about the preciousness of life under the sea and the need to protect it.

During our Topic lessons, students use the text, If the World Was a Village to examine the world's as a breakdown of 100 people. This helps students better visualize gender, education, economy, etc. It also helps students understand that there is a disparity between different groups of people as well.

To raise awareness and funds for students in our local community with DMD. Our DCSZ students wrote wishes to the children who struggle with this disease and made gratitude chains. We welcomed Tang Mama in to talk to the students.

Year 3 Bug Cups

During Year 3 Art classes, we made bug cups using little clay pinch pots. Our goal was to raise awareness about the importance of sustaining the tiniest creatures on our planet, especially during the summer and hot weather. These cups are designed to hold a teaspoon of water and should be placed in the garden. The purpose is to provide a water source for the busy bugs while they are busy pollinating.

Year 4 - persuasive letters

The students were learning to write persuasive letters. The final topic of their letters was to ask our catering company to use less products with irresponsibly sourced palm oil.

This built on their knowledge learned in Y3 about the rain forests, and linked with our unit about how the earth is changing. So they were able to build on their foundations of climate change and life on land through this activity. They also learned that there is power in our voices.

Year 6 Music students worked to re-write a verse of John Lennon's "Imagine" inspired by the SDGs. Students imagined a world where everyone took action towards positive change.

Eddie the Penguin Saves the World

Year 3 Drama students put on a production of Eddie the Penguin Saves the World which sparked many conversations about climate action and what we can all do to make a difference. Within the script there were lots of examples of "teaspoons of change" and the students brainstormed further action to take inspired by the story.

Students worked to create sustainable costumes and sets by re-using existing clothing items and by turning cardboard trash into ice bergs and cityscapes.

Nearly all of the set pieces, costumes, and props for Production were created out of recycled cardboard (thanks everyone for donating boxes at the start of the year!) and costumes were mostly made of reused items from previous years.

PE - Quizizz Assessments

This academic year we applied a new way of assessment, Quizizz.

This made us save lots of paper for the school and time for the teachers. It is also more engaging for the students and increases their willingness to perform the assessments.
