I took a look through your empathizing phase before reading about the ideas that you came up with and there are a few ideas that blew me away and seemed to really match what your students are looking for in their assignments to be enjoyable! You mentioned that your students wanted to find places to be creative, yet still enjoy reading materials about topics as they like to research about people!

Those responses seemed to really fit well with your idea in the "Kings & Colonies" sections where students could persuade people to come to the colonies from the point of view of the king! This would be so cool to see how the students take the information they learn about the king to put themselves in his shoes to write a persuasive poster (maybe like a bulletin?) that he would have used to get people to move to the colonies!

The other place where I saw this type of activity where students put themselves in historical figures shoes is the "Declaration of Independence Break-up Letter" (reminds me of the King George song linked here from Hamilton) but this time from the perspective of the colonies this time!

I think that giving students the chance to write from the perspective of another person would be a great way to engage students in their research as they are not only looking for facts, but also how those people talked and wrote in order to engage the creativity even more! This mind map is so well done and I love all of the ideas!

I have looked through this in our conversation circles, but wanted to reiterate how much I love this! I may have to snag some of these ideas for my social studies unit! I have always loved the idea of choice boards, but rarely take the time to complete them. I feel in school we can often fall into the habit of teaching, "this is the way it's supposed to be done, and this is the best way". I can fall into that mode where I want all of my students to complete it the same way so it's easier for me, as the teacher, to assess it. But that's not meeting my students needs -- that's not preparing them for the real world. You have such a cool concept for your prototyping phase! I really like your idea of giving students the choice of what to do in each column. Each column's activities are engaging and promote student learning through technology tools. Having a wide variety promotes students using new platforms that students may not have had experience with before. Also, those games that you found are so cool! I had never heard of the American Revolution Game or the 13 colonies games but may have to incorporate those for my students.
