How My Project Came to Life

I am a film composer by trade, and had the great fortune to get involved in higher education and have a 13+ year second career. After 9/11, the world changed as we know it. I'm sure many of you experienced hardship and change during that time. My family lives in in NJ and I had been living in California since 1992 making my living as a film composer. Priorities changed after a family member was in the first tower that was hit on 9/11. This was paralyzing to all. The motion picture industry slowed down as appropriate content and subject matter was in question. Work was scarce. I was offered a job at Pepperdine University that grew into an incredible journey and second career. I continued to teach and score for projects that didn't impose on my new position. I had a lot of experience lecturing and presenting seminars in film scoring as I had a great foundation from USC and wonderful teachers. Ten years ago I married someone who happened to be in the film business. He is a film producer who also spent some of his time mentoring young filmmakers and lecturing. We were in Paris a couple years ago lecturing at the American University in Paris (AUP) and someone gained interest from administrators and faculty to create a certificate program. About 2 years ago, while on a film location scout in the Philippines, I was offered a commission to come up with a full curriculum.

Quote about musicians I hold dear.

This quote is about the constant tug and pull most artists live everyday. In my case, practicality vs the love of music and need to play and write every day.
"Musicians are some of the most driven, courageous people on the face of the earth. They deal with more day-to-day rejection in one year than most people do in a lifetime. Every day, they face the financial challenge of living a freelance lifestyle, the disrespect of people who think they should get real jobs, and their own fear that they'll never work again. Every day, they have to ignore the possibility that the vision they have dedicated their lives to is a pipe dream. With every note, they stretch themselves, emotionally and physically, risking criticism and judgment. With every passing year, many of them watch as the other people their age achieve the predictable milestones of normal life - the car, the family, the house, the nest egg. Why?
Because musicians are willing to give their entire lives to a moment - to that melody, that lyric, that chord, or that interpretation that will stir the audience's soul. Musicians are beings who have tasted life's nectar in that crystal moment when they poured out their creative spirit and touched another's heart. In that instant, they were as close to magic, God, and perfection as anyone could ever be. And in their own hearts, they know that to dedicate oneself to that moment is worth a thousand lifetimes." -David Ackert, LA
