Although most closely associated with Scotland (and even the stereotypical trappings of Scottish identity), Burns’s reputation is international.

There are statues of Burns all over the world, in places as far afield as North America and New Zealand. His likeness has appeared on bank notes, postage stamps, and Coca Cola bottles, and an edition of his poems has even been sent into space. Burns has had many admirers, from other poets and writers through to world leaders. For example, US president Abraham Lincoln was a big fan of Burns and could recite lines of his poems by heart.

If you ever find yourself in Scotland on the night of 25th January, you’re in for a treat because this is Burns Night, one of the most important and fun nights of the year! On Burns Night Scottish people celebrate the life of Robert Burns, Scotland’s most famous poet. So what should you expect at a Burns Night supper? Well, it might be formal or informal, but it will always be entertaining

First of all, the host says a few words to welcome everyone to the supper and opens the meal with a reading of “The Selkirk Grace”. Guests then stand as a bagpiper pipes music to welcome the star attraction of the supper – the haggis, a sheep’s stomach stuffed with the sheep’s heart, liver and lungs. Next, an invited reader recites Burns’ poem “To a Haggis” and cuts open the haggis with a sharp knife.

Источник: Spotlight, 10 класс

Burn`s works are well- known in Russia .The first translations appeared in the early XIX century. Belinsky, Zhukovsky, Lermontov, Balmont...tried to translate his poems into Russian. But thanks to the Soviet poet Samuel Marshak, who translated almost a half of heritage of the great Scotsman, we are familiar with his greatest works .Marshak's translations were so melodic that they inspired many Soviet songwriters . So Robert burns became the author of songs for many Soviet films. .We have never thought these songs were actually from Scotland. Here are some examples:
