I am an educator who advocates for my students. Students should all be treated equal. Race should not barre students from having an opportunity to succeed. I will strive as a school counselor to create an atmosphere where students can thrive and learn without fear or intimidation. My padlet is for all audiences including parents, educators, and students. The name of my topic is "Equity in Schools". I chose this topic because as an African American female, I am all too familiar with inequality, especially in schools.

The Legal guide "Equality in Schools", is important to me because as a minority, I am aware of inequalities and unfairness in schools. Minority student have longed been at an disadvantaged in education. They are behind their counterparts in education. All students should be treated equally regardless of their race and should have the same educational opportunities as their counterparts.

Best Practices:

Every will student will receive the equal resources and opportunities.
Parents, educators, and students get involve and model and promote an equity atmosphere.
Give students a voice to be heard and implement a plan to create equality in the classroom.

Emerging Issue:
In the decade ahead, I anticipate that the grassroots #REDforED movement will continue to build momentum, demanding dignity in our public schools through increased equity and access for all students. Education has always been a central issue of public activism and civic engagement. Teachers, young people, and their families have historically viewed schools as a battleground for equal rights and social/racial justice. Recently, we have seen a rise in teacher activism—teachers in states such as Arizona, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Oklahoma, and now in Florida are rallying together outside state capitals and city halls to demand support for schools. The public perception is often that teachers strike for their own pay and benefits, but in these cases, they are fighting for guidance counselors and nurses to understand their students holistically, for vanishing arts programs that inspire creativity, against the stresses of high-stakes testing, and to take down a school privatization movement that has seized control of public education.( Hong 2020)

I interviewed Latrice Tate, A school counselor at Seminary Hills Park Elementary in the Fort Worth (FWISD) School District. She has been a school counselor in FWISD for twelve years.

Interview:
This legal guide impacts my campus because my campus is a multi cultural campus. My students come from thirteen different countries. No One is more important than the other. I try to meet all my students needs and make accomdations for them, considering they are from diverse cultures. There are no specicific compliance that I have to monitor but there are specific guidelines for TEA (Texas Administrative agency) and ASCA that I must follow to make sure I foster an inclusive atmosphere for all students. There are some state laws I do follow to make sure I follow all guidelines regardling students equality concerns. There are students rights that relate to this case. Based on current laws and ASCA ethical standards, all student have the right to be treated equal and be included in their learning environment. A student should never be excluded from having an equal shot at learning. Most of my students have launguage barriers. I set goals for them and provide resources to help them overcome their languague barriers and meet their goals. I attend school counselor conferences and read a variety of articles from different school counselors associations to stay current on topics.

As the executive director of student services for Gwinnett County Public Schools in metro Atlanta, Tinisha Parker is having the conversations and instituting policies that break down systemic racism in schools. “There has to be an expectation that this work will be done,” she said. “In my district, we’re trying to change hearts and minds. We can mandate behaviors, but that doesn’t mean hearts and minds have changed. You have to have policies and expectations about adult professional learning and how adults will treat students in your district, your building and your school.” (Hickman 2021)

This article discusses how our school system is a prime example of education inequality for minority students.
Students of color and who come from low social status do not receive the same education as those in a more predominantly neighborhood.
The article explains how minorities continue to face significant barriers to accessing educational opportunities, such as better resources.
According to research in the report, the data showed teachers who served students of color were given fewer instructional resources than other schools in the same district, regardless of whether they are urban or suburban.
The article also mentioned how these struggling schools tend to get inexperienced teachers adding to the issue.
Low socioeconomic schools have fewer resources and inexperienced teachers.
The article states those students are less likely to receive advanced and challenging courses.

Slide #5 Current News Article- Book ban by Central York school board of racial justice materials spurs student protests

This article is about students at Central York High School have been protesting over a list of Black- and Latinx-focused books the school board banned.
The article states many staff and students believe a list of racial justice resources promoted by the district's diversity team last year led to a list of books that students are not able to access through Central York.
Forty students stood outside the school before class with signs calling for the school board to reverse the ban and recognize diverse voices.
Banned resources include items such as a CNN collaboration episode with the children’s television show “Sesame Street,” an exhibit in the Smithsonian Museum available online and the PA Association of School Administrator’s statement on race. (Panyard 2021)

Judicial Law- Brown vs. Board of Education

Administrative Law- Texas Administrative Code

(D) Standard 3.4. The educator shall not exclude a student from participation in a program, deny benefits to a student, or grant an advantage to a student on the basis of race, color, gender, disability, national origin, religion, family status, or sexual orientation.

I chose this law because Texas has laws in place to prevent discrimation based on color, gender, and disability. All students will be treated equally and afforded equal opportunities in texas schools.

I am an African American educator and I am all to familiar with inequalities in schools amongst minorities students. My personal connection to my legal guide is that because of laws that prevent discrimination based on race, I am afforded educational opportunities and success that I may not otherwise have had. Discrimination laws provide minorities students with desegregated schools and better opportunities to succeed. Minority students now have the same educational opportunities offered to their counter parts. They also are afforded the same books, learning materials, and supplies to learn. It is now illegal to discriminate against minorites.
