Sometime around 1,500 B.C., a nomadic group of people known as the Aryans invaded India through a gap in the Hindu Kush mountain range called the Khyber Pass. These people overtook the civilizations of ancient India and enslaved them. Over time, the Indians and Aryans mixed to create a culture known as the Indo-Aryans, and from this culture and its many unique traditions, Hinduism was born.

Hindus believe that on major deity created the universe and all life, and his name is Brahma. It is their belief that he takes form in many other Gods and Goddesses, like Vishnu and Shiva, and these three Gods make up the Hindu triumvirate, or the three Gods responsible for creation. The Hindu religion also promotes Dharma, which is their moral code for duty, religion, and other things. They believe in Atman, or one's eternal self that is either transferred to a new life or given Moksha, or union with Brahma, upon death. Karma also plays a large role in Hinduism; it is the belief that the actions of one determines the outcomes of future events in his/her life.

One of their major religious texts are the Upanishads, which are ancient Sanskrit writings that detail some basic beliefs and philosophies of Hinduism. The Upanishads are a part of the larger Vedas, which is a collection of many old Sanskrit hymns, rituals, and ideas that outline much of Hinduism. One of these ideas was the Caste System, which was a rigid social structure that was put in place, with priests, known as Brahmans, at the top, and servents and slaves at the bottom.

There are two major Sanskrit epics of writing that have influenced the Hindu religion. One is the Ramayana, which tells the story of the Prince Rama on a quest to rescue his wife from the clutches of Ravana, the demon king. The Bhagavad Gita is part of the Mahabharata, which is the second major epic of ancient India, and is actually the longest epic in world history. It tells the tale of the two families, the Pandavas and Kauravas.
