In her early 20s, Sandra Cisneros realized that an image of her type of house and neighborhood had not been represented in books, tv, and film. It made her feel ashamed and depressed. She wanted to write about her culture and experiences that were unique to her, so she wrote House on Mango Street for a school assignment.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Loyola University Chicago in 1976 and later received a Master of Fine Arts from the Iowa Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa in 1978. Cisneros is best known for her novel The House on Mango Street (1984), which portrays the struggles and dreams of a young Latina growing up in Chicago. In addition to novels, she has written poetry, short stories, and essays. Some of her other notable works include Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories (1991), Caramelo (2002), and the poetry collections My Wicked Wicked Ways (1987) and Loose Woman (1994). On December 20, 1954 Sandra Cisneros was born. She was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents met in Chicago but had both came from Mexico. Cisneros was one of 7 kids and the only girl. Cisneros wrote her first poem when she was 10 years old. And did not write more until she was in highschool. After highschool she attended Loyola University of Chicago, then graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Then continued on to the University of Iowa where she graduated in 1978 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing. She was a Poet, Novelist, Teacher, and a Essayist.
