At that time Carter was president and right away he wanted to get the hostages back. But he did not want to start dropping bombs on Iran, which made Americans think that he was weak. Even though using military force would increase his polls in the election, he refused to do s. He wanted all the hostages back alive. He kept working to get them back before his term ended. But right when president Reagan took the oath a few hours later the hostages were released. And they were said to be waiting at an airport waiting for President Carter to not be president anymore. This is important because it made Americans perception of President Carter change which helped Reagan win the presidency.
