1E. Kapp. Rainforest Biome by Mark Rapp

The Biome is very unique because of the high amount of rainfall that it receives each year. The total rainfall annually totals up to 160 to 660 cm. The rainfall fuels an abundance of producers greater than any other biome. Producers adapt to compete for sunlight and water. These plants are the base of a large and complex food web involving numerous consumers unique to this biome. The rainforest is truly one of the most interesting biomes on Earth.

Rainforests are one of earth's most exotic biomes. Several factors contribute to the abundance of life in the rainforest.
One of the most important abiotic factors present in rainforests is the extreme humidity and rainfall. This is caused by the abundance of plants absorbing groundwater, and releasing it into the air through transpiration.
This biome's location, in the latitudes near the equator, means it receives abundant sunlight. The sunlight fuels plant growth and photosynthesis, as well as evaporation.
Humidity is a sort of combination between sunlight and moisture. The extreme humidity leads to an abundance of plants, fueling complex food webs, but any consumers in a rainforest must adapt to the moisture and temperature.

Producers such as the Heliconias have thin outer layers on their roots that prevent them to take in too much water at a time, as it is abundant in rainforests and a surplus can be harmful. Bromeliads can grow on any surface, including rocks or other plants. They adapt to absorb moisture from the air.

Lemurs adapt to store fat in their tails, which they can use in the winter while they hibernate. Flying foxes, large bats, develop a strong sense of smell to recognize family members, mark territory, and hunt. Their big wings let them fly long distances despite their large bodies.

The rainforest contains around 3,000 species of plants, like strangler figs, as well as 417 species of land animals, including the Asian Elephant and Sumatran Rhinoceros. Another group of organisms that live in the rainforest are insects which are primary consumers. Some of their adaptations are changing their colors so they look poisonous when they are really harmless. As well as the ability to camouflage themselves in order to blend in with their surroundings, so they could not be seen, and therefore not be prey for other animals.

This can therefore conclude that the plants take in about 9,000 Kcals for every square meters of carbon, which is keeping harmful carbon out of the atmosphere.
Credit -
https://www.slideshare.net/shadiaduery/chapter-3-30740323
