A golden age means when only positive events occur such as economic growth, an increasin amount of cultural output. Basically when everything is going well for a country/place at that point in time.

For an age to be classifies as golden i believe many factors play into this. One of them being economic growth. Also, the overall happiness of the population and prosperity for the majority of the population. The Crusades were religious motivated war you could say.
