Throughout the history of education, learning took place in various settings and locations. With the turn of the industrial revolution, many workers needed reading and math skills that were not previously required. So based on the factory model or also known as the Ford model of Education, our traditional classroom style of desks facing the teacher and a chalkboard and a bell system to change classes, came into existence( Basye D, Grant p, Hausman S. & Johnson, T, 2015). The classroom was similar to the factory setting where those students would someday find jobs.

Today, most of our classrooms do not model our present-day working environments. As educators, part of our job is to prepare our students for the workplace so we should begin to redesign our classroom space to resembled more closely present-day workspaces. This can be accomplished with some of the ideas presented in this presentation.

Current classrooms should include easy access to the digital world. We will better prepare our students to be productive employees if they have been taught the safe and appropriate use of technology. They already have access to technology, so educators should teach them good digital citizenship and to apply it to their learning experience as well as everyday life. Schools first must purchase the technology that they are wanting to use, this can be a huge expense to undertake. Designing classrooms to effectively use computer, laptops, tablets, interactive TV and other technological resources can be a challenge in buildings that are decades old. The buildings most likely will need additional electrical outlets or possibly even more breakers drawn to the classroom. Providing enough wi-fi for an entire school is an additional cost as well as staff that is equipped to keep everything running smoothly. These are costs that are well worth it for our schools to keep up with a fast paced changing world.

Providing an education that will prepare our students for the present day workforce would also include changing the physical space of our learning environment. Most classrooms are filled with desks that are uncomfortable and difficult to move. As adults in the workplace, we enjoy comfortable seating and the ability to work side by side with out co-workers. Our students deserve this as well. Classrooms that provide comfortable, flexible seating are on the rise in many schools today. Allowing our students to sit on the floor with pillows, on yoga balls, bendy stools, comfy chairs, to name a few, help make students more comfortable as well helps our more active learners be able to engage more easily. Classrooms with work tables instead of traditional desk, allows students to work together on projects and assignments. This more accurately portrays the real life work space. Classrooms that have a small group area, large group areas as well as quiet ares for individual reading or studying provide learners access to work spaces that meet the needs for various activities and engagement.

As schools continue to change to meet the needs of the world around us, we will see more of these facets of change coming into the classroom. As educators, we need to be open to change and advocate for things in our classrooms that will help our students succeed in the workplace someday. Learning to redesign our learning spaces to both facilitate active and collaborative learning.
