The Dear American and Royal Diaries books by a variety of authors
Each book explores a time in history that the main character experience first-hand, like crossing on the Titanic, being at the Battle of the Alamo, living in a Native American boarding school, being a captive of Native Americans, working in a mill to support their family, striking out as a pioneer, being royalty, and so much more!
And since the stories are written as diary entries or letters, we really get to see what it was like to be a kid in that time period.
I love reading historical fiction because it transports me to another time and place that actually happened, and I get to imagine what is was like if I were actually a part of history.
I read most of these when I was a 2nd through 5th grader, but some stick out as favorites and definitely earn a 5-star rating from me: Elizabeth I: Red Rose of the House of Tudor (England, 1544); Voyage of the Great Titanic: The Diary of Margaret Ann Brady (RMS Titanic, 1912); My Heart Is on the Ground: The Diary of Nannie Little Rose, a Sioux Girl (Carlisle Indian School, Pennsylvania, 1880); and Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie: The Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell (1847)/
When you read a Dear America or Royal Diaries book, you, too, can live another life in history.
