LEONARDO CALLEA
Xylography is a printing technique in which an image is carved into a surface of a block of wood, while the non printings parts are removed with gouges. After the surface is covered with ink, leaving it upon the flat surface, without the no printings parts.

Lithography is a method based on the immiscibily of oil and water. The printing is from a stone with a smooth surface, on it is used an image drawn with oil. When the draw is finished, you must to put a mixture of acid and gum Arabic. When the stone is moistened and the water retained, the ink can be transferred to a blank paper sheet, producing a printed page.

Etching is a printmaking technique that use a chemical action to produce incised lines in a metal printing plate, and after it hold the applied in it to form an image. The material used is zinc, prepared with an acid-resistant ground, and lines are drawn through it. The plate is immersed in the acid producing some bitten lines. After the acid is removed and the ink is applied to these lines.

Color is light reflected from a surface, ita can create emphasis, harmony, emotions, unity and moment. It has three distinct features : Hue related to color, value related to darkness of a color and intensity related to dullness. With their fusion color can confer intensity.

The non-printing parts can be removed with gouges, specific tools with U or V blades( V for the slimmer lines). A chisel is used for deleting the white areas.

Another printing technique is the lithography. It is based on some physical property, for instance on the fact that water and oil can’t be mixed.

The main different between Xilography, Lithography and Etching printing techniques is that:
In the Xilography the artist’s drawing is made in a piece of wood, and the untouched areas are then cut away with gouges, leaving the raised image which is then inked, moreover it doesn’t need the use of acid while the other two; Lithography is a technique executed on a smoothly grained slab of zinc, limestone or aluminium plate and it’s based on the use of immiscibility of oil and water. The different between lithography and xilography is the use of a mixture of acid and gum arabic on the portion of the stone not covered with the grease-based image.

Printing Techniques

Lithography is a method of printing originally based on the immisciblity of oil and water. The printing is from a stone or a metal plate with a smooth surface. Lithography originally used an image drawn with oil, fat, or wax onto the surface of a smooth, level lithographic limestone plate. The stone was treated with a mixture of acid and gum arabic, etching the portions of the stone that were not protected by the grease-based image. When the stone was subsequently moistened, these etched areas retained water; an oil-based ink could then be applied and would be repelled by the water, sticking only to the original drawing. The ink would finally be transferred to a blank papersheet, producing a printed page.

Xylographic was a printing technique that involves carving text in relief upon a wooden block, which is then inked and applied to paper.

Etching is the practice of incising a design onto a hard, usually flat surface by cutting grooves into it with a burin.

Gum arabic is a natural gum consisting of the hardened sap of various species of the acacia tree.
