My top 3 would definitely be We Don't Talk anymore, by Charlie Puth featuring Selena Gomez.

I relate to it quite closely in my own way. I interpret the meanings of the lyrics in a way that fits my emotions of leaving my host country and my friends and family abroad.

This song was released near the end my student exchange, and gradually gaining popularity now. By this time, my host family and friends do not really talk anymore. The lyrics really makes sense to my situation, and I sympathize with it a lot.
The connections I had with all the moments I had with them all the seems like a distant memory. And I'm not sure if I had moved on from them properly or not.

And that's what makes this song personal to me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AtDnEC4zak

My second would be Best Day of my Life, by American Authors. This is a song with generally happy, energetic lyrics with upbeats.

I listen to it, almost like an optimistic reminder, or something to lift my spirits. When something has gone bad during my day, by singing along and believing the lyrics made me realize that nobody else controls my happiness except me. I know it makes me sound like I'm depressed all the time, but this song helps me control my emotions and not do anything irrational.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y66j_BUCBMY

未来(Future), by コブクロ(Kobukuro). It's a Japanese song with a soothing instrumental. Almost to the point it's sad.

This song is about the future, and how it's unpredictable and unstable. And that you will always have someone to have your back, during difficult times. This is how my Japanese friends conveyed their message to me before I left for Malaysia.
"They will always have my back, even if I am not physically there with them."

The lyrics are very poetic but easily understandable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Db_8kxp1j8

I think the best way to support musicians change people thinking, we show to people that how much effort we put to make music. So they can know that the money is musicians salary.

What are your biggest musical influences today?
Top 3 songs that I frequently listen to:
1. 海阔天空-Beyond
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu_FSptjRic
This song is from a Hong Kong Canto-Pop rock band named Beyond which was founded in 1983 and officially disbanded in 2005 because in 1993, the founder of the group Wong Ka Kui died due to an accident while filming a show in Tokyo, which is a very very sad case, not only for me but the elder generation too, as Beyond was once SO SO influential and prominent in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and China or wherever there are Chinese people. This song received numerous awards too.

Whenever I listen to this song, it literally gives me goosebumps and a really good and vivid flashback of the good old days of mine and past decades of the world.

"原谅我这一生不羁放纵爱自由

也会怕有一天会跌倒

背弃了理想 谁人都可以

哪会怕有一天只你共我"

This is my favourite part of the song. It actually describes the hardship and challenges Beyond went through when they tried to expand their career and introduce their influential music to the world.

Whenever I listen to this song, it actually reminds me of my own determination and perseverance in everything I do, the reasons I take challenges and strongly motivates me to move on in life.

2. 光辉岁月-Beyond
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq6gZBTwPFk
This song is from Beyond, the Hong Kong Canto-Pop rock band I mentioned above.

In 1990, Beyond traveled to Kenya and they witnessed the hardship that the people there were facing due to war, natural disasters and poverty. Back in Hong Kong, Wong Ka Kui read from the news, about Nelson Mandela's horrible experience in prison as he stood up for racial issues. Wong had a mutual feeling for Mandela and eventually, Beyond created this song where they understood Mandela's fight for hope and freedom. Beyond wrote this song as they had similar experiences of working very hard for their career. This song received a few awards too.

Basically, most of the song lyrics represented Nelson Mandela's courageous fight for freedom, equality and hope. The lyrics too represented Beyond's determination and hard work in expanding their career. And for me, it reminds to never give up in everything I do.

3. In The End-Linkin Park
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVTXPUF4Oz4
This song is from an American Rock band, Linkin Park. It is the eighth track on their debut album Hybrid Theory (2000) and was released as the album's fourth and final single on October 9, 2001. In the End is one of Linkin Park's most recognizable and signature songs.

"I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter"

The lyrics basically talked about hard work, determination, perseverance and never giving up, which I absolutely can relate as hard ships and problems always happen in my life. This song reminds me to stay bold and to never give up.

Most influenced songs for me

1. Ultralight beam- kanye west

I think it's more effective to understand this song well if you are fan of Kanye West. Actually he is really religious guy( christian). People who see kanye on SNS can think that kanye is really crazy people. However if we see his albums, he always want to peace. For example in his song,
Heardem say, we can know about this point easily. From this point, i choose this song cause this song is related his real thinking. We can know about it in his lyrics, like 'pray for paris' . Moreover the beats and melody of this song are really combined well with message which kanye want to say in his lyrics. That is why i choose this song.

2. The letter- Kim Kwang jin( korean song)

http://youtu.be/3SF0ASmivD8

I love this song cause the lyrics are really pretty. The story of this song is that after broke relationship, the guy talk to his x girl friend to live well. This singer song really softly never be depressed. So i can feel that this singer's real feeling.

3. Don't stop me now-Queen

http://youtu.be/HgzGwKwLmgM

Actually when i listen this song first, i interpreted that this song have sexual atmosphere. But after i saw all lyrics them search about Freddie Mercury, I though this song may talk about other situation. I thought this song have a story which a man is having narcotic( if think about his life). Of curse this is my thinking. Anyway after I thought about this song like this way, i just can not enjoy this song even if this song have really bomb melody.

The biggest musical influences to me are The Doors, David Bowie and Nirvana. Especially Nirvana. I feel that these bands/musicians gave outsiders the chance to embrace who they really were.

In the case of the Doors , lyrically they send extremely powerful messages especially in their song "People are Strange" which describes a man who feels alienated and different.

Personally, I believe that Nirvana brought out the true meaning of rebellion. Grunge is a genre of music that I've always felt a connection with because I've always felt like I never belonged anywhere. I never belonged with any specific group of people. But when I listen to music , especially grunge, I feel like someone out there understands me.

David Bowie is a huge influence to me due to his sense of gender fluidity. My favourite song by him is Ashes to Ashes for its lyrics. It actually tells a story of a cocaine addict and the experiences that addict (also known as Major Tom) goes through. I like this song especially as it showcases Bowie's talent in the sense that he juxtaposes a happy rhythm with dark lyrics.

The song I listen to when I'm angry is Negative Creep by Nirvana (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5ijtz6Du_s)
Listening to this song helps me calm down as it doesn't make me as angry knowing that there are people out there who are angrier than me.

The song I listen to when I want to relax is Asleep by the Smiths ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy0NySCmuFU)
The lyrics of this song holds a very deep meaning as it actually is in the perspective of someone who has just had enough of life and wants to sleep....permanently. Although it is quite dark, the song itself is extremely relaxing.

When I feel alone I listen to People are Strange by the Doors.(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0Mz_IqpZX8) "People are strange, when you're a stranger , people seem wicked, you'll feel unwanted" , "when you're strange no one remembers your name".
These lyrics are exactly how I feel about myself. Like an outcast and just...different. But most importantly extremely awkward. I always feel a sense of comfort knowing that there are bands and songs out there that understand how it feels like to not be boxed and accepted by the "cool kids".

"

This part of the song is my favourite. In my opinion, i think of it as one person asking another to take a leap of faith with him, even though that may seem foolish. "there's strength in the blindness you fear".This blindness you're afraid of.This future that you can't see,the void of nothingness you see us falling into, it isn't something to be feared. You take a chance despite it and that is what makes you stronger.
This song influenced me to take risks. It taught me that you are not supposed to be scared with the things that you are not sure of the outcome.

2. The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-cD4oLk_D0
I always listen to this song whenever im in a car with my friends. It is because the lyrics of the song is about someone who wouldn't mind spending time with someone a special someone. To me each and everyone of my friends are special. I wouldn't mind wasting my time with my friends.

3. 30 Seconds To Mars - Closer To The Edge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLqHDhF-O28
This song means a lot to me because i think its about searching for one-self true character, what made us, ourselves. Even when it drives you to the edge. Even when it takes you to drive your close people to their own edge. That's why it says

"i'm not saying i'm sorry
one day, maybe we'll meet again"

the search is personal, and not everybody around us can understand that. But maybe, in a future, they have found themselves and can accept us for who we are. But first, we have to loose ourselves. Every inch more close to the edge.

This can be done through attending their concerts, paying for their soundtracks on iTunes, buying original albums, with the mindset that this is what the artistes, musicians and singers deserve at the very least after months and years of handwork to produce such quality music.

Besides that, it is important to understand how buying pirated music albums can affect the music industry especially on the artistes, musicians and singers itself, preventing them from earning royalties and what not.

My top 3 songs are:

1. Remembering Sunday by All Time Low.

https://youtu.be/ccKV1X9uyP4

- This song will always be my go to song whenever I'm stressed out or when I feel upset. The reason is because the way the singer sings this song makes me feel calmed and makes me feel stable again and this is one of the songs that I can listen to over and over again and it will still feel like the first time I am listening to it.

2. World So Cold by Three Days Grace.

https://youtu.be/RhOQb-hrgpk

- " I always thought I'd make it but never knew I'd let it get so bad living with myself is all I have"

This is my favourite part of this song as it shows that it is actually okay to be alone and be independent. This song has actually made me feel more comfortable about being alone.

3. Scars by Papa Roach.

https://youtu.be/eHbNU9WuVgw

- " And our scars remind us that past is real."

This lyric gets to me everytime because it shows that whatever that has happened in the past stays in the past and as a human being, you need to learn and move on from your past, either a good or a bad one. This part of the song also shows that I am not the only struggling and I should never feel like I'm going through something alone.

And mostly because I downloaded 90% of his music for free...

How and what do you think we can do to support our artistes?

I believe that music is over commercialized. People already know their artistes, so I feel that the recording companies should not upload all the music videos on free online websites, like YouTube. The artistes already have the publicity they need so instead of uploading the full length of the videos online, they should tease it and only show the first 50 seconds of it. This way, they will still have the publicity, and it is teased enough, the fans would be curious enough to buy the music. If not, the public will listen to it the first few seconds again and again, this might build the curiosity of the audience, and hopefully, they would actually buy the music

MY TOP 3 SONGS WOULD BE:-

1. A Match Into The Water – Pierce The Veil (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ti-5MKMOTrQ)

TEE HEE I AM WEARING THEIR TEE.

This song is really nice to listen to especially during funerals and I remember having this song on repeat for a week when a friend of mine suddenly passed away. The song talks about this girl who dies suddenly, and her best friend terribly missing her and blaming God for “stealing her away” from him. Much like the title itself, match into the water, in my perception is talking about how fast life is. One second, the match is lit, and the next it is thrown into the water. Boom. Gone.

2. Hold On – Good Charlotte (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gobdU5Pycvg)

Goshhhhhhhh this song is so meaningful to me holy shiz. This whole album in fact, and the band themselves. Everything is raw and they didn’t write the lyrics to beautify life instead they just rote from their heart. This song encourages people to hang in there a little longer, despite all those voices around you telling you to kill yourself. “Hold on, if you feel like letting go, hold on it gets better than you know. Don’t stop looking, you’re one step closer. Don’t stop searching, it’s not over. Hold On”. What else should I elaborate on? (ALSO JUST A SIDE NOTE THE MUSIC VIDEO FOR THIS SO WAS SO MOVING FOR ME OMG. THERE WERE REAL PEOPLE IN THE MV REPRESENTING THE LOST LIVES OF THEIR LOVED ONES. AMAZING. AMAZING.)

3. The Irony Of Choking On A Lifesaver – All Time Low (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i73k9qJ40R8)

“You’re the snake hidden in my daffodils, when I’m picking flowers. That’s just my life these days, why can’t you just be happy for me?” This song has always been about me. I listen to this on the way to school because this song helps me prepare for hell, and it helps me deal with the snake in my daffodils. Their always there lurking, and ready to bite whenever they can. They bring me down, bite me where I’m weak in. The song talks about this person who is always bringing people down to get up the ladder. That’s just not how it works dude. Grow your wings and fly away. Bye.

2

1.Secret Love Song – Little Mix

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK0XhP1UMFw

- Basically, the song is about a hidden relationship. So I have experienced it this relationship before. I have been with ‘him’ like for 4 years and he never ever shows me as her girlfriend in front of the public. Yes, people didn’t know about our relationship except for my family and my best friends. These lyrics in this song which are “Why cant I say that Im in love “ , “ I wish that we could be like that , why cant we be like that, cause Im yours “ “ nobody knows im in love with someone’s baby, I don’t wanna hide us away” . They are all just fit with my situation.

2.

1. Chasing The Sun by Sara Bareilles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfIuJpdTDCU

I would say that this song has particularly played a role in lifting my perspectives in certain situations where the hope seems so far away. I would really consider this to be one of her most inspirational songs to date, due to the upbeat tempo that seems to showcase the optimistic and heartwarming side of the song.

You said remember that life is not meant to be wasted
We can always be chasing the sun
So fill up your lungs and just run
We’ll always be chasing the sun
All we can do is try
And live like we’re still alive.

I personally interpreted this song as an encouragement to go out and start living life to the fullest. Life is way too short and precious to waste it because every 60 seconds wasted is a minute you will never get back. To me, “chasing the sun” means to go after what you want in life, how you want to live it and what do you want to do with it. The Sun represents all that we hold close to our hearts; hopes, dreams, fears, challenges. Together, they create your destiny and your story but you are the one who decides how to write it.

“And the gift of the heartbeat and its symphony” represents the fact that it is a gift in itself to be alive and healthy today, to be able to do something, to be someone. Therefore, do not take life for granted. Go out there, breath and start believing.

2. Little Did You Know by Alex and Sierra
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bzIpYiPUUo

This song clearly expressed the emotions of two unsure lovers that had hurt each other in the past. This song is different in a way that they are individually singing different verses to each other, almost as if they are speaking to each other in a conversation. While it deals with a darker topic, the song portrays a real and genuine image as no relationship is entirely happy.

The words “I’ll wait” and “Just wait” are examples of repetition that have an extended meaning towards the necessity of patience, when healing. This has given me a sense of understanding that it is okay to take as much time as we need while healing, there is no rush to it because we should allow time to do its job.

While at most times, song mostly focuses on some fictitious aspects of a relationship in general, there are many instances in which this song conveys the true nature of the relationship between the writers, giving the listeners an image of relationships in reality.

3. We Dance by Bethel Music ft. Steffany Frizzell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFfw6OSbUwE

This song specifically made an impact in terms of building my faith spiritually. It is subtle, intimate, and lyrically impressive. Through this song, she invites us into a snapshot of her relationship with Jesus, while giving worshippers a wonderful expression of romance to the Lover of their souls. The picture she paints of a divine “dance” works very effectively as well.

Every time I listen to this song, I can feel God almost putting His arms around me, as I swayed back and forth with Him. That's the best feeling, letting God lead me. It was in that moment that I could picture myself looking into His eyes.

"I will lock eyes with the One who ransomed me, the One who gave me joy from mourning." All of a sudden, there's the dance, everything is made right, and we are declaring back to Him that this is our choice. This is what we'll do and it turns into a really positive declaration.
