The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, was first passed in 1990 as an act to prohibit discrimination against those with disabilities, the original act centering around the workplace.

In 1999, the Supreme Court made a ruling that narrowed down who was protected in the ADA, leading to the ADA Amendments Act. This Amendments Act rules that when it is possible to allow services for those with disabilities, it is required.

The ADA Amendments Act, or ADAAA, was signed into law in 2008. Since the introduction of ADAAA, the term "disability" has broadened drastically.

ADA and ADAAA are both important for the inclusion of assistive technology as it prevents from discrimination due to someone's assistive devices (i.e., allowing people using wheelchairs to use elevators, etc.).
