I would explain all of the positive aspects of having a chrome book at home. Let parents know all of the benefits of the technology and why your asking their child to use it. Explain ways to have them use where they would be sure to stay on task. Have them use the technology at the kitchen table where there is a better chance they will stay focused as opposed to doing homework in their rooms..ect.
-Lindsey Jernigan

As a teacher, I would first set up a couple of informational meetings for the parents and students to help them understand why technology is so important. During the meeting I would show the parents how the technology is being used to help educate their children. Show them that this is the way of the future. Technology is scary for ones that do not understand it. But by helping educate the parents on the why, it won't be seem so scary to them.
Traci E.

I would do what I could during the school day to interact with technology and help those children that do not have access to technology figure out the basics. I would also teach students other ways to find information and complete projects. At the end of the day, I have to respect a parent's wishes for their home, but I do believe that it is my responsibility to at least get my students to a point where they can navigate a computer and know how to use it as a resource.
- Alissa Walker

My high school had a similar 1:1 program. One thing that I would do that my school did that I found helpful was having a "tech event". Parents and students would meet at the tech event with multiple teachers and discuss the rules, regulations, and benefits of having the 1:1 program. I would house an event similar to this one, giving the benefits of the technology. I would also have a small deposit in case of accidents because they do happen. I would encourage parents to access a monitoring program at home that is similar to the monitoring programs that is available on televisions that prevent certain channels from being viewed. I would also lesson the parents to monitor the history of the computer activity. If parents yet did not want their student to bring their computer home, the student could have the same access to the same material in school or on school lab computers.
-Tyler Egenberger

There are a few different ways to address this issue with parents or even as a school staff. One way with parents it to tell them they can monitor their children by looking at their history on the computer, or giving a curfew for electronics. After a certain time of night the computer gets put away. As a staff member, I would talking to the school tech staff and see if there was a way to block certain sights on the computer or enable a passcode so only certain apps can be downloaded. I know our work computers are even monitored at home and they can see what websites we get on.
-MacKayla Hemmingsen

As a teacher, I would have a meeting with the parents and children. At this meeting I would explain the rules and responsibility to both the parents and the students. I think that if we make our expectations very clear, the students would respect them for the most part. If it is made very clear that if rules are broke, computer privileges would be taken away at school as well. Also, I think that if parents make their children use the computer at the table and not allow the kids to use the computer in their rooms, there would hopefully be less inappropriate use of the tool, as well as less chance of an accident. Also, let the parents know that accidents are going to happen, and as long as it can be explained and the story matches the damage, there maybe a damage insurance that could be purchased for a reasonable price.
-Heather Doggett

I would first start off with having a meeting with all my parents to discuss the chromebooks and their uses in the classroom. Then I would allow for the parents to ask questions and give their concerns with the chromebooks. I would also teach Internet safety within my classroom before use of the laptop. I would have strict rules that each student would have to follow. If parents still have concerns, I would offer advice in having the chromebook at home , for example, turning it off at a certain time or only allowing them to be on it while you are in the room with them. My sisters all have chromebooks from their school in Axtell and my mom has set rules that include getting homework done first before play on the computers and that to remember the chromebooks are NOT own by them. So they should be treated with care. I think if you provide parents with the right information, it helps in success.
-Gabrielle Nickel

If I was a teacher in this situation, I would educate both the parents and the students about the benefits of having a Chromebook to use at home rather than only at school. Some of the benefits are: the student would be able to study by using computer programs, complete assigned homework through the computer, and research for projects. At my high school we were allowed to take our laptops home and at the beginning of the year parents had the option of paying a small fee for insurance in case something happened to the laptop while at home. I would try to implement at the school I would be teaching at. Having the insurance gives the parents that are worried about their kids damaging the computers a chance to breathe.
-Emily Dethlefs

I would explain to the parents how much the use of technology impacts the students learning and ability to comprehend material. I would suggest setting limits at home for the use of the Chromebook, such as, when not in use the Chromebook is kept in the students backpack to prevent accidents from happening. Also, I would recommend the student use the Chromebook in the main living space of the home where there would be supervision near by. If after giving these suggestions, the parents are still reluctant, then I would offer time before/after school where such students would be allowed to come into the classroom to work on the Chromebooks at school to finish their work.

Michelle Austin

I went to Kearney High and issues like this came up. In order to fix the problem, some of my teachers taught the lesson quicker and gave us time to do the homework in class so we had time to do it if we needed our chrome books. If we did not get the homework done, the students who do not take their chrombooks home were to go in after school to finish the assignment. I would talk to the parents and let them know how important it is to take the Chromebook home when needed. I would help set up a plan with the parents to only have the students chromebook out for so much time and keep it in their backpack so it doesn't get ruined.
-Hannah Nutt

Also, try to give students time in the classroom so they can do the assignments in school. That way they won't need to take the chrome book home everyday. Technology is everywhere and it is rapidly growing. So of course parents get worried about their children using the internet. But I think that if there are workshops provided for the parents to educate them about technology and how they can help their children. Some parents may not be aware of it or not know how to do it but they can set up blocks and control the webpages their children access. So once the parents are educated about that then they can feel more comfortable about their child using the internet. As for the cost of replacing the chrome book if it is damaged, the parents can pay a small fee to cover the chrome book for the school year in case it gets damaged. So that way the chrome book is covered.
-Angelica Calderon

I would be sure to meet with each parent and explain to them how we use our laptops in class and show them the websites first hand. Each child is taught how to treat these laptops and I would make sure that the parents knew how they are to be treating them as well. It is very important that the parents are informed about what their kids are learning in school and to get them involved as well.
