- Allows for probing questions that test underlying assumptions.
- Quick to mark – immediate feedback is possible. Marking criteria and guides can be carefully developed so that assessment processes can be quick, simple and transparent.
- Allow students to demonstrate a logical flow/development of an idea.
- Improve students' verbal skills
- Students are familiar with this assessment method.
- Misconceptions can be corrected: while a written exam gives a snapshot of what the student understood or not, in an oral exam the examiner can ask the student to think again if the answer is wrong. Or can give a counterexample that takes into account the student's answer
- Oral exams also help validate the originality of students' work
