         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Built in the 6th century </p></li><li><p>2 statues standing 114 and 174 feet tall carved into the sandstone cliffs in the Bamiyan Valley</p></li><li><p>Even though Islam was dominant, the monuments were really important to African history and national pride. It also spread through silk road. Because of the central location it was an ideal for merchants and missionaries to stop and because of this Buddhism became popular in the area.  </p></li><li><p> In 2001 the statues were destroyed by the Taliban over the course 25 days</p></li><li><p> Considered the largest sculptures in the world at the time  </p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Construction began for this temple in 1060, under King Anawrahta. </p><p>The temples' evidence of adapting to the local Buddhist culture, incorporating the native tradition of spirit worship from Burmese culture. Figures from <em>Nat </em>worship were placed in subordinate positions to the statues of Buddha. </p><p>Two facts: Houses relics of Buddha: Bone and tooth, even footprints of Buddha. Covered with more than 30,000 copper plates on the exterior. </p>]]></description>

         <title>Mogao Caves, Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Gansu, China (366 AD)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The first cave was carved out in the 4th century, and the last cave was created in the 14th century. </p><p><br/></p><p>The Tang Dynasty influenced many of the architectural and painting techniques used in the Mogao Cave. It used the classic Tang multicourtyard layout, and the ceilings were made with the "Thousand Buddhas". The caves also had paintings that incorporated traditional Chinese mythology deities alongside Buddhist ones. </p><p><br/></p><p>Fact 1: Famous for its collection of Buddhist art, including over 45,000 square meters of murals and over 200 painted sculptures. </p><p><br/></p><p>Fact 2: The temple contained a hidden library cave that was discovered in the early 20th century, which had many medieval manuscripts that provided the region's history and culture. </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

The tight design made it safe and fit the valley’s harsh weather and earthquakes.</p><p>It was built from local stone and earth, blending into the hill, using local methods instead of outside styles.</p><p><br></p><p>Fun facts </p><ul><li><p>Got raided by the mongols in the 17th century, causing a lot of damage. </p></li><li><p>Largest monastery in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh.  </p></li></ul><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>-The White Horse Temple demonstrates Buddhism's adaptation to local Chinese culture through the translation of Buddhist scriptures to Chinese by two Indian Monks, showing language adaptation. And the temple being built in similarity with other local buildings in the surroundings, showing architectural adaptation.</p><p><br/></p><p>- The White Horse Temple was the first Buddhist temple in China. It was established in 68 AD and is still a popular place to explore Chinese Buddhism.</p><p><br/></p><p>-The temple was built as a thank you to two Chinese men who were sent to India to study Buddhism and brought back a white horse carrying Buddhist Sutras and Figures. It was the first time Buddhism appeared in China.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Built in 7th century (647 AD) </p></li><li><p>The temple evolved toward the architecture of a vihara, a square Indian temple with a cloistered courtyard</p></li><li><p>Brought Buddhism into the land and became an inseparable part of Tibetan history and culture. The city of Ra-Sa grew around the temple over time.</p></li><li><p>Most sacred Buddhist temple in Tibet</p></li><li><p>Has a life-sized statue of 12 year old Buddha</p></li><li><p>According to legend, the lake site the temple was built on was chosen after many failed attempts to build a temple in the region. Prior to this, every time a monastery was built, it would collapse. When the construction work was done, it was called Ra-Sa-Vphrul-Snang ('ra' meaning goat and 'sa' meaning earth in Tibetan) to commemorate the 1,000 goats used to bring soil from a far mountain.</p></li></ul>]]></description>

         <title>Angkor Wat</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>-Angkor Wat was built between 1113 and 1150 CE by King Suryavarman I of the Khmer Empire as a Hindu temple and mausoleum to honor the god Vishnu</p><p>-Buddhist monks traveled on the Silk Road, as well as Buddhist traders from India and South Asia, took effect, people in the empire began to shift towards Mahayana Buddhism. Under King Jayavarman VI, the empire experienced a large-scale shift towards Theravada Buddhism, in which Angkor Wat was converted to a Buddhist temple. The shift represents the cultural diffusion of Buddhist traditions into Khmer life, specifically the addition of Buddhist art into the temple, which was previously designed to represent the Hindu galaxy.</p><p>-The Angkor Wat temple is featured on the Cambodian flag</p><p>-It is the world's largest religious monument  </p>]]></description>
