Laura: She is kind of impatient because in the text, her dad is going to surprise the kids, but she wants to know right then!
She clearly does not feel like waiting so she tends to get a little moody when something does not go her way. This is also the reason she is kind of sassy.

Specifically, in the story there is some type of conflict between Laura and her dad because her dad always tries to be more optimistic and positive. He tries to be the best dad he can be for the kids. Every since their mom died of cancer, the family as a whole has had trouble recovering from the tough loss, so Laura typically isn't as happy as she used to be with her mom around, which is why she tends to get more upset with her dad.

In the story, the family is getting ready to go on a surprise trip that their dad has planned. They live in Arizona I think and they always try to be optimistic throughout the trip even though it may get hard at times. They also try to have fun and make good use of the time they have together because they know they may not get to do a lot of traveling again. Unless it is because they are going to their grandmothers house. Their grandmother lives in either Oklahoma city, or just Oklahoma.

Personally, I would rate the book 4/5 stars because, overall the concept makes sense. I find it kind of funny how everyone in the family has such a different attitude, but you can somehow shove all of them in a car and take them on a road trip and they actually get along somewhat. This, for me is the most humorous part about it because I find it funny seeing them argue and kind of have that daddy daughter talk which normally doesn't always go as planned. I think this book is appropriate for people 3rd grade and up because everything for the most part makes sense and most everybody should be able to enjoy it.

In the story, there are many different settings because they are basically going from one place to another. They start off at home in Arizona. Then they go to their neighbors house to drop their cat Larry off. Then they get in the car and head to Big Bend National Park. This is a place where you can stay in a cabin or outside in the great outdoors. They can also spend a great amount of time together even though they may not get along at all times
