While women’s salaries have increased in recent years, pay disparities based on gender continue to plague our society. Although avenues - such as the Equal Pay Act (EPA) - have been put in place to address the persisting pay gap, it is important to investigate the effectiveness of the EPA in closing the wage gap and to find out why a wage gap still persists in our society.

I will argue that a wage gap still exists between men and women, although some believe one does not. I will support this argument with sources - from their research - that provide a wage gap existed about a century ago, that some believe this issue to be false, and that this issue still exists today.

The EPA, among other laws, has been effective at reducing the gender wage gap - although there was a span of about 17 years that it was not effective, but that there is still a gap, nonetheless. I will also discuss the fact that the wage gap can be seen as inconsistent due to various factors that are taken into consideration when figuring the pay gap within certain occupations versus occupations as a whole - some sources also refute my claim. My sources will provide data from studies, and graphs of data regarding the wage disparity from various governmental entities.

As a whole, the EPA has been moderately successful at closing the wage gap over the last 50 years; however, there are a variety of factors that affect the wage gap between men and women including how women are viewed by men and the discrimination from which they suffer. While there are solutions regarding this issue that offer a glimmer of hope, it will be quite some time before the gap narrows more so than it has over the last 20 years or completely closes at all.

An article by Theresa Brady (1998), provides that the Equal Pay Act had not effectively done its job for approximately 17 years via a graph from the Women's Bureau (Brady, 1998, p. 59). Furthermore, Brady's (1998) article provides there are various issues that narrow and widen the pay gap, and that both men and women see men as the overall controllers and leaders in the world and at work - from a study she conducted on both male and female students (Brady, 1998, p. 60).

According to Brian Fung (2018), "the U.S. Census Bureau has consistently shown that men out-earn women when it comes to salaries" (Fung, 2018). The article also provides information from a study regarding newly created businesses that gives evidence that this issue also affects non-traditional pay (Fung, 2018).

An article by Hilary Lips (2003) provides various graphs showing pay discrepancies between men and women spanning between 12 and 60 years. Most of this information is from the U.S Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (Lips, 2003). Lips' (2003) article also suggests that the gap involves numerous factors such as the higher wages for women, as well as lower wages for men (Lips, 2003, p. 97).

Furthermore, she offers that many people are not aware of the disparity of pay between men and women (Lips, 2013, p. 224).
