In the beginning of chapter ten Gallien found out that the kid he had helped out was found dead at a remote camp on a Stampede Trail. He was shocked and couldn't picture that the kid wearing his boots and also had a long conversation with recently had just been found dead, but when he heard of it he also heard that no one new him or could find his identity except for Gallien. He told the state troopers that he gave him a ride but they didn't really pay attention because they have been hearing from a couple of people that they knew the hikers identity. Through the chapter there was a couple people who knew him and others didn't but a specific person was phoned about it and it was his half brother Sam McCandless. It never crossed his mind that it was Chris but when they started giving him brief descriptions on Chris, Sam just knew it was him. He didn't know a lot about his half brother but knew enough, so he went home and picked up Michele, his wife, and "drove out to Maryland" to tell his dad and Billie. He had no idea how to tell someone that their child was dead.

"At such a time you felt the need of committing yourself to something absolute--life or truth or beauty--of being ruled by it in place of the man-made rules that had been discarded." This is talking about how you shouldn't follow every or anything that is man made or told to you, but also committing yourself to a passion you have. Its about making your own executive decisions but also committing to the decisions you make and not letting critics or anyone tell you otherwise.

Krakauer identifies with Chris because they are alike with this obsession to travel and mountain climb, basically to explore things because they are curious people and Krakauer explains that on page. 134" Like McCandless, figures of male authority aroused medley of corked fury and hunger to please. 2. Krakauer is like Chris saying," figures of male authority aroused in him a confusing medley of corked fury and hunger to please." He also talks about how is something caught his undisciplined imagination, he pursued it with a passion on the edge of obsession, and from him being seventeen until his late twenties it was mountain climbing he was hungry for. 3. Krakauer writes about his self in this chapter to let us better understand and inform us about what people like him go through when they have that hunger or passion to do something like an obsession so we can learn how McCandless thinking process was and why he was turning back on achieving his goal.
