Our school is located in the central part of Portugal, more or less 100 km away from big cities like Oporto and Coimbra. It is a public school in a rural area which means that most students' families live from agriculture. Others work abroad mainly in Switzerland. That’s why a significant percentage of our students live with a relative. The population of our school mainly comes from the town and the surrounding villages. Currently 206 teachers teach at Agrupamento de Escolas de Castro Daire and 1588 pupils attend it from Kindergarden up to secondary education, thus our students ages vary from 3 to 19. In terms of vocational courses, the offers kind of change every year according to the needs of the work market. Since Portugal receives a lot of tourists from abroad and requires skilled workers in that area , our school tends to adapt to that and almost every new school year the pupils who just want to complete compulsory education can choose professional courses related to tourism, catering, massage or ICT. As far as regular education is concerned, at the beginning of the 10th form pupils are required to choose what they would like to study during secondary education which lasts three years. The most chosen courses at that level have to do with science and technology.

Primary School "Učitelj Tasa" (‘’Teacher Tasa’’) dates back to 1830, which makes it the oldest school in Niš. It is located in the heart of our city.
It is named after the teacher Atanasije Petrović. Teacher Tasa, as the people of Niš called him, was only 17 years old when he accepted this service.
Students from all parts of the city attend the school.
Several generations in the family are students of our school.
Nowadays, Primary School "Učitelj Tasa" has more than a thousand students from 1st to 8th grade, divided in 40 classes, four groups of extended stay for students of 1st and 2nd grade and three preparatory preschool groups.
The students of our school, as well as all the employees, create and cherish an exceptional work atmosphere, as evidenced by the numerous successes and awards of our students and colleagues over many years.
Elementary school "Učitelj Tasa" is the holder of the highest recognition of the City of Niš, the award "Eleventh January", which is awarded on the occasion of the Liberation Day and the highest award of the Ministry of Education "Saint Sava" which is awarded for the quality of work and the contribution in all aspects of education.

Birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, the city of Niš still embodies the combination of exotic East and elegant West.

Today a modern tourist center with museums and historical sites that are on european must see maps, Serbian city of Niš has been a gate connecting the East and the West ever since it was established. Even nowadays, driving down the roads through Niš is the shortest way to reach the Middle East from Europe, or cities like Sofia and Istanbul from Vienna, Budapest or Prague.

This route has been called “Carigradski drum” (The Road to the Emperor’s city ie. Constantinople/Istanbul) since the Middle Ages. In its rich history, Niš was even the birthplace of a great emperor.

During the day you can visit its numerous museums and sites of great historical importance, like the Mediana archaeological site (remains of a luxurious Roman settlement), the Niš fortress (best preserved Ottoman fort in this part of the Balkans) or “Ćele kula” (“The Skull tower“, a unique structure built by the order of the Ottoman Hursid pasha using the skulls of Serbian soldiers killed in the Battle of Čegar during the First Serbian uprising), and then, by night, listen to some music at Nišville jazz festival or watch a movie at “Filmski sureti” (Cinematic meetings) film festival.

It was the Celts that have named this old city, and they did it after the river Nišava that still runs through it. In their language, its name is Navissos – the Fairy’s river.

According to one of the legends about the foundation of Niš, it was built “in time before history” by the rocks brought from a nearby Humska čuka (the Hilltop of Hum). But the most glorious in city’s history was the Roman period.

During that time, Niš was a major cultural, economic and military center, and the birthplace of emperor Constantine the Great, who has proclaimed religious tolerance throughout Roman empire and was first ruler of Rome to convert to Christianity.

Anyone interested in history and ancient Rome should visit the remains of emperor Constantine’s palace in “Mediana” and revive the time of its fame.

Modern day Niš is an important center in Serbia. With the population of more than 250.000 people, it is the third largest city in the country.

Beside numerous historical sites, you shouldn’t miss walking down the city’s main street nor tasting the Serbian cuisine and having lunch in one of its well-known “kafanas” (Serbian traditional taverns).

Get ready for a wide variety of flavors, great barbecue and abundant food portions with a lot of meat and spices but also don’t miss the local “burek” (a kind of cheese pie), a specialty that has its own festival – “Days of burek” – held every September in Niš.

Niška banja (the Spa of Niš) is located just 10 km far from the city, and Sićevačka klisura (the Sićevo gorge) is also near.

Being on the crossroads of Balkan routes, Serbian culture has for centuries preserved the identity and authenticity of Serbia and its people.

Positioned on the crossroads of the main Balkan routes, Serbia has inherited a considerable cultural wealth. Among the remains of the tens of centuries old civilizations, there are traces of people who lived in this region 40,000 years ago, impressive Roman heritage, as well as medieval material and immaterial cultural wealth. All of the people who inhabited or still inhabit Serbian soil have included something of their own into Serbian cultural heritage, thus making it more valuable and interesting.

During the territory’s prehistoric period some of the most complex cultures were developed such as the culture of Lepenski Vir, then Starčevo and Vinča culture.
The first cultural monument written in Cyrillic script is the 12th century “Miroslavljevo Jevanđelje“ (Miroslav Gospel), written using gold on a white parchment, which UNESCO included in the most significant works of the world documentation heritage.
The first specialized school for women in Europe was established in the 14th century in Serbia, while in that same century, Serbia had a female writer, nun Jefimija, whose works are considered the jewels of medieval literature.
Literature has always had an especially significant place in Serbian culture. Inside the books of Serbian writers, in the last few centuries, tales have been preserved about the past living conditions in Serbia, the suffering of the people, mentality of people from different parts of the world… The novel “The Bridge on the Drina” by Serbian writer Ivo Andrić even made a mark on the world literature by winning him the Nobel Prize in 1961.
An important part of the material culture of Serbia, besides the extremely valuable fresco painting that ornaments the walls of the Serbian monasteries, are works of the famous painters like Sava Šumanović, Paja Jovanović, and Uroš Predić.

Music is an essential segment of the Serbian cultural wealth, and is reflected mostly in the songs and dances from this region. Serbian folk dance is kolo, performed differently from region to region, while the famous folk instruments are before mentioned “gusle” and “frula” (an instrument resembling a small recorder or a flute), and a small tamboura in Vojvodina. A trumpet is also very popular in Serbia.

The backbone of the Serbian culture consists of ethnic heritage and rich and unique tradition of the country that is best observed in its customs and the region-specific values. One of such values is the Orthodox custom of celebrating the family saint, which will soon be included in the representative list of the immaterial cultural heritage of the mankind, compiled by the organization UNESCO.

Displayed in numbers, the list of immobile cultural property consists of 2109 cultural monuments, 72 regional cultural and historical sites, 167 archaeological sites and 71 sites of significance. There are about 250 cultural centers, 160 libraries and 100 museums.
