From 1,000 AD, Viking sailors used magnets in order to navigate. Due to a large amount of lodestone in Scandinavia and their dark winters, with little light to navigate ships by, they developed a sort of compass. The Viking sailors used a magnetised iron needle which the places on a piece of straw. They floated the needle in a bowl of water which indicated north and south.

Lodestone

The Chinese placed a splinter of lodestone into water to float, again directing them. Marco Polo and other explorers brought their findings of this new compass back to Italy which allowed the Europeans to navigate the world 500 years later than the Vikings.

Chinese Compass

How would we assess the child’s prior knowledge

First we would do a KWL chart to find the children’s experience with magnetism. As a class we can make an anchor chart to refer to during their investigating. We can decide what properties we may need to brush up on with help from the curriculum documents.

Kellie owns an air hockey table at home and we were intrigued by the air pressure and how it interacted with the game. We then explored the possibility of applying this to magnetism.

The purpose of our task was to create a game using magnetism. After researching other interactive games on the internet, we decided we would revert to our fascination with air hockey... making our own magnet hockey.

Our evaluation of the game we made centered on three main points
1.Would it be a meaningful support to curricular learning?
While we made this game we discussed opportunities where this game could aid our teaching and how to incorporate it.
2. Does it function as an interactive magnet game?
We admittedly took great pleasure in our beta testing of this game once the paint dried as seen in our video above. This was a clear indicator that it did indeed function as hoped.
3. Would it truly engage and delight children?
An import goal for us was to make something which we can actually use in a classroom that would entertain the students while actively learning about magnetism. To test out our theory we had a younger relative try out our game to see would it appeal to the age group. Thankfully it was thoroughly enjoyed and we were then satisfied with our project.

Did we achieve our aim ? From our final testing of the game, it was clear to us that we could introduce the concept of attraction and repulsion within magnets via the paddles and how they would only work using the correct magnet side.

What would we do different if given the chance ?
We all agree if we were to remake the game we would have had a more exact approach to assembly. We didn't really abide by the measure twice cut once saying, and estimated our measurements as seen by the lack of numbers and sizing in our design drawings.
