Story

On May 27, 2020 a statement was released by Marriott International, a multinational company that operates, franchises, licenses lodging for hotels, residential, and timeshare properties. Responsible for nearly 200,000 employees worldwide the company would struggle largely from the travel ban that the world had to deal with because of the Coronavirus outbreak. There are even some reports stating that the effect Covid-19 had on the hotel industry will be present until 2023 or later. Also tourists are not as prevalent due to varying regulations towards the pandemic. This is a time in our world were it is a very problematic time to travel and visit other parts of the world.

The statement went on to discuss the impacts that the virus has done on the Marriott financially. The Covid-19 pandemic had hit the hotel chain harder than 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis. Due to this the company stated that it would be forced to let go of some of their employees while offering a voluntary transition period to those intending to leave the company permanently to pursue other opportunities. CEO Arne Sorenson told his workers in a video message that difficult decisions would have to be made while reassuring everybody that the crisis will end and that the Marriott would be ready to succeed again. However, there was no promise of how many employees would be kept and who would be released so there was still a large amount of skepticism towards the hotel chain.

During this time in efforts to keep the doors open the Marriott had several hotels open their doors to frontline workers battling the pandemic for free to isolate themselves from at-risk loved ones. Essentially eliminating the costs of payroll to allow these other workers a stay at the hotels.

Instructions: Choose on of the prompts to respond. Make connections with the readings in our course.

Prompts:
1. How does the idea of firing your workers and letting others live in the hotel for free make you feel? Is it Justified?

2. Do you believe the Marriott is giving their workers a fair response to the pandemic?

3. How would you have responded to the crisis? Is there more they can do?

References:
https://news.marriott.com/news/2020/05/27/statement-on-marriott-internationals-covid-19-update-to-associates
https://en.blog.doodle.com/2020/07/22/6-examples-of-effective-crisis-leadership/
https://www.traveldailynews.com/post/marriott-international-reports-on-environmental-social-and-governance-progress
