My name is Lauren Tabet and the program I am enrolled in at Angelo State University is Professional Counseling. A personal goal of mine for my future role as a counselor would be being able to help individuals overcome their pasts traumas and watching them thrive and living their life without fear or judgement. A professional goal of mine would be to have my own private practice and building and providing a safe space for my clients. I would like to get a better understanding of trauma after this course. There are so many things that could cause an individual to experience trauma and I would like to learn how to help them overcome it or at least feel comfortable with what they are experiencing.

The 2014 ACA Code of Ethics guides counselors on how to behave professionally and ethically. It talks about important topics like keeping information private, respecting a clients’ rights, setting boundaries with clients, supervision, and using technology safely. This code is important because it helps counselors make good choices, protect their clients, and earn trust.

The Texas LPC Rulebook (July 2025) explains the rules and ethics for Licensed Professional Counselors in Texas. It includes information about getting a license, supervision, continuing education, keeping client information private, and what happens if the rules are broken. This rulebook is important because it helps counselors do their work the right way, follow the law, and keep their clients safe.

Introductions and Assessing Prior Knowledge Reflection and Artifact

Looking back at what I wrote, I realize how much I’ve learned already. The mental health worker shortage surprised me and showed me how needed counselors are. Learning about racial differences in access to care reminded me how important it is to be aware and fair with all clients. The information about children’s mental health confirmed that I want to work with kids and teens. This reflection helped me feel more sure about becoming a counselor and making a difference.

I really enjoyed working on this assignment and feel that I learned a lot about the different types of mental disorders and their causes. Gaining this knowledge is important for my future role as a counselor, as it helps me better understand what my clients may be experiencing. This assignment opened my eyes to the wide range of mental health conditions and expanded my overall understanding. So far, this has been my favorite assignment in the course because I truly feel like I learned the most from it, and I can now confidently identify and explain most major mental disorders.

Developmental Discussion on Trauma Reflection and Artifact

In this assignment, I learned about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how they can cause trauma early in life. ACEs are difficult or harmful experiences that happen to children and can affect their mental and emotional health as they grow up. I also watched the documentary Unabomber: In His Own Words, which showed how trauma can impact a person’s life in many ways. Watching the documentary helped me see real examples of how trauma affects behavior and emotions. I enjoyed this assignment because it gave me a clearer understanding of what ACEs are and how trauma can come in different forms. This knowledge is important for me as a future counselor, so I can better help clients who have experienced trauma.

Psychological First Aid Online Certificate Reflection and Artifact

Before this assignment, I didn’t know what Psychological First Aid (PFA) was or what it was used for. It took me about five hours to complete the training and get certified. During the process, I learned that PFA is used to help people after they experience something traumatic, like a natural disaster, accident, or other crisis.

I also learned how important it is to be trained in PFA so you can give the right kind of support when someone is going through a tough time. I'm glad I got the chance to learn about it and get certified. This assignment helped me understand how helpful PFA can be, and I’m happy I now have the skills to support others when they need it.

Crisis Prevention and Threat Assessment Reflection and Artifact

The Crisis Prevention and Threat Assessment assignment was an interesting experience. It was a group project that I completed with my classmates Brooke and Alicia, and our topic was domestic violence. I already knew quite a bit about domestic violence from a course I took during my undergrad, but I was still interested to see what our group would come up with.

For my part of the assignment, I worked on the slides covering Cultural Competence, Special Populations, Training for Staff/Community Members, and Legal and Ethical Requirements. I also created the final References slide for the presentation.

One part I found challenging was the Cultural Competence slide. There wasn't a lot of detailed information available on this topic in the context of domestic violence, which made it harder to research and complete. Despite that, I enjoyed working on the project and collaborating with my group members.

Overall, this was a valuable assignment that helped me better understand how crisis prevention and threat assessment relate to domestic violence.

ABC Crisis Model Reflection and Artifact

The ABC Crisis Model was my final assignment for this class, besides the Padlet. Before this course, I had never heard of the ABC Crisis Model. However, after doing this assignment and going through the resources provided, I learned a lot.

For the assignment, I read a case study and highlighted different parts using color to show four areas: physical, emotional, social/relational, and mental/cognitive. After that, I used the highlighted sections to figure out the client’s needs and issues. Then, I created a plan that a therapist might use if the person in the case study was receiving counseling.

This assignment gave me helpful insight into how to support clients in crisis. I now feel more prepared and plan to use this model in the future.
