I am most interested in getting this degree to be able to speak and write better. I haven't gone to school in a few years before starting here. Being a college graduate will help me beat out other candidates in the department when it comes to openings.

A food that serves as a totem in my house would be flour tortillas made from scratch. The rituals that surround this food are being with my family while my mother makes these. They are made mostly during holidays or family get togethers. The practices that would go into this commodity are the careful chosen ingredients used, my mom said she uses a particular flour. The ingredients required are flour, water, oil and they are mixed together in a bowl. Then made into small circles, then pressed and stretched out by hand to then be cooked on a pan on the stove until the dough is no longer raw. The practices that are overlooked are that it may seem like a simple process but it is very difficult to make the batch the same each time because my mom doesn't measure it out she just knows. This is something overlooked when the family is eating them, we just see them there and eat them simply.

The first item I remember buying was a football. It was a small one about the size of my hand. I was 7 I think, I paid for it with money that my grandma had given to me when I visited her. I was excited to buy it because I wanted to take it to school to show my friends. I got the football taken away at school because another boy tried to take it and say it was his. The social pressures that made me think it was a good purchase was that another kid had brought a yoyo and everyone wanted to play with it and him. It was shaped by my gender because other boys my age also played with footballs and football players are men and they were and are still on the advertisements for playing these sports.

I found this read very interesting, it had some odd parts but overall informative. It's so nice to learn about other cultures and what they practice, yes odd the way they go about this exact one such as them using rituals for the mouth that one keep being on my mind after I read that. Here we have medicine and we go to the dentist for our teeth and there they use rituals to make they stay good and healthy. They also use the body rituals that involve some odd ingredients such as the hog hairs. I wonder if these people would find the things we do here strange.

After watching the lecture video for culture video 2 the one thing that stuck with me was the part about languages. That some older cultures have languages that are dying out because they are not written and there are only a few people left who speak these languages. The other part that stuck with me made me laugh was the crayon part that when kids get a box of crayons. I will talk to a child and say nice green toy they will say no it's teal and it throws you off that they know the difference. When other places in the world don't have that many words for these colors such as what was gone over in the lecture video.

These lectures are so interesting and always leave me really thinking hard about life and the way we are suppose to think or react to certain things. Society either has us thinking what we do it bad or go depending on if we follow what we think society has us belove or what our culture and religion have us believe. One part that made me think really hard was about the married couples and cheating, it's bad because society tells us it is but what about couples with open marriages and couples who leave countries and never get ahold of their spouse every again. If they decide to date what would society say about this fact.

This assignment would be easier when covid is not such a worried thing we have to watch out for. I saw some students getting together to work in groups sitting very close together and talking normally. They had no maks on and drank their coffees without worry. In that same group I saw some kids keep a small distant and wear their masks the whole time, they didn't sip any drink or take their masks off. Around me I saw some people talk to others but they all seemed to know the people they spoke to. Many people sat and stared at their phone or laptop and didn't speak to anyone. There was a group of older men who sat together in a couch space, they didn't seem to know each other but started chatting. This group of men were not on their phones or laptops they just chatted while they sat there. This group of men all seemed to be from the middle east. This Starbucks seemed to have many younger upper class young adults around early 20's and a small group of older men and not many older women at all. This space would be friendlier if it wasn't a divide between masks between drinks and no masks at all. The area this starbucks was in was a upper-class neighborhood.

After reading the Appendix is had some very informative parts about the way methods are observed researched and pulled apart to see how it will work. The most interesting part to read was about survey research, I have seen many places to respond to surveys after an online purchase, after dealing with a customer service representative or about how an issue was dealt with with internet issues. Data is constantly collected all around us and it is used to conduct research. On instagram there are questions at times if you've seen an ad during your time on the app. They are very fast to see and do at times and other times they are long and very specific, all surveys are different. I have never been in a focus group but in movies they seem to deal with focus groups often to see how people respond to ads or photos of things or how they would react in a situation. In a movie one time they brought people in for a focus group but really they were doing an experiment on the group to see if they were listening to all the instructions. Experiments are another way to conduct the research in a deeper scientific sense, I know there was a part that describes that not all sociologist use the term science to describe their work.

As we are learning about research and different methods and ways to approach the types it puts into perspective how far we as humans have come along. That was something that's been on my mind this week during the readings. The breakdown of the steps involved in social research is a great way to understand the order of how it is taken step by step and is nice to see just how many steps go into it. I have always found forming a hypothesis a difficult thing to do because I was never able to break it down as easily but after reading more about it I feel a bit more confident. Surveys are a great way to get the information you need when trying to conduct data. It's better for the environment to do these surveys online but it seems easier to ask someone in person to take a survey compared to sending an email that can be deleted. Also it is better to get a round sense of people to do the surveys when you can give to many people that pass by.

Human behavior is what separates us all in times when we explain reasonings at time I think. Some people say oh sorry we all make mistakes then their are others who say they should've known better it's not okay. The question of hiring an ex-con is difficult one for some and for others it's cut and dry yes or no. Personally I would depending on the crimes, my uncle went to jail for most of his twenties and is reformed now. I would hope someone would see that and hire him in the appropriate setting. The tests about the criminal records is so weird to see that we can put these types of things into data to make charts and study them when they are the truths about someone's life. To one person it's a chart to another it's their reality. It is awesome that there are studies done to show the effect of race when it comes to crimes because it shows how the crimes are shown as a specific crime to a race.

After reading this chapter I feel a better understanding of how we all try to stay trendy. People use tik tok to follow and try to stay ahead of trends before others can do the same one, then people will say how they already did that or like it to stay current. A popular gif or meme I see often on Instagram is the attached gif. I happen to catch the show Euphoria from time to time when my girlfriend watches it and I noticed this was the show these memes would come from. People also take sound clips from the show on tik tok to voice over a situation that matches the audio because people feel they can relate to the characters situations and feelings. I remember the " Get a mac" campaigns very well, they were shown often and macs seemed like the cool option, even now Iphones are widely popular and we look at people that don't have Iphones and we ask why not. Some say they don't like them or that they change too often and they can't keep up. People won't always mention the price because as a society we view talking about money as a taboo and it rarely is used as the excuse when underlying deep down it is the reason why we don't keep up with trends. Staying current with shoes and clothes is difficult if you can't afford it. Bing team Iphone or android also connects to our identities, we are on one side or another such as with our football team choices and our baseball teams. Parts of our everyday life form our identities and who we are. When we are asked who we are such as the 20 answers we gave in our discussion we don't mention race well atleast I always don't because I feel it doesn't always have to do with who we are. My cultural raising were different because my census data is not how I was raised all my life and is why I don't start off with my race as part of my identity. I am so much more than that and I believe that many people don't want to be seen as their identity having to do with their race.

The first day of class most teachers make you introduce yourself and that is the first impression your teacher and classmates will get of you. Sometimes the teacher will ask you to answer a few questions or you just have to give a statement about who you are and what you like. I don't know if anyone else feels this way but I always struggle to do this because it is so hard to come up with cool things to tell your class that will impress them or make them think you are cool. In that moment you can say anything that will give your classmates the impression of you that you would like them to have. Once you hear what others start to say you get a sense of what you should say and what you should avoid. This is a lot like a first date, you don't want to scare the girl off by saying something that makes you seem any way you don't want to seem. You want the upper hand of the information they receive. Goffman says on page 142 that we try to figure out who has the jump on who in situations. It is a power play in who will lead in ways, we will tend to follow the lead of who first takes charge and they set the tone of the conversation or relationship. When we present ourselves we try to present the best versions, our best clothes, best jokes and best impressions. We want everyone to think that we are always this way and that's why first impressions are so important. It is a bit misleading but it is human nature in a way to try our best for strangers and for others.

In several movies and tv shows they have had characters who are Morticians such as "My Girl", "Mike & Molly", "The Haunting of Hill House" and they all portray them differently. In "My Girl" they show the side of getting them ready for the funeral and how they will put makeup on the women to try to focus away from other things. In "Mike & Molly" they use humor, the sister Victoria says she has to be high on Marijuana to do that job because it will make her sad to think about all the sad things that come along with the job. After reading it seems that all the morticians have different ways of dealing with the job and making sure they try not to get emotional or make it personal. They all have ways of dealing with the work and dealing with the stigma that comes along with it. Some use humor, some saw it as just a job that needed to be done and some tried to do their best to make them look as normal as possible such as the one man did with the child.
I feel that most jobs have a stigma that follows and it can be good or bad. It takes a while for a new profession to become either seem a certain way or for it to be seem sort of normally after a while. It seems as when morticians became a job with full services and funeral homes the stigma was that they were weird for these jobs but it just seemed like a need and service that could be handled by someone who didn't know the person. I'm sure some people would still like to get the family member ready for the services but im sure there are also people who would not be able to handle it. I think that all jobs are tough and have their moments but they are all a job that exists for a reason because there is a need for it to exist. The changing of certain words in the industry was definitely a great thing that helped them be seen differently and help the stigma. Interviews such as these give people deep insights into why people do what they do when others don't understand why or how they are able to.

Yes I can think of a time when I purchased something because I wanted to fit in with a group. When I was around 20 my friends all got motorbikes and they all would go and ride together for hours at a time. They would make day trips out it, going to ride in different places and they would bbq and eat and spend the day together. I was missing out by not having one so i decided to get one to be able to join in on these rides and go on these day trips with the rest of my boys. This conveyed my membership i the group by giving me a membership in the first place, I was able to join and being able to ride with them since I had a motorbike like they did. This purchase did end up satisfying my desire for belonging because me and my boys had some really amazing times just going and riding and cooking and just being together. We still get together to ride but now the group is much smaller because not everyone in the group ket their bikes. I don't regret buying the bike because the memories and still being able to ride made it worth it.
This purchase was one that was fun to go shopping for it wasn't a hassle but it definitely was a motivation to get it fast to not miss one more day of riding.

The title of these pages threw me off because I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to be reading about and how it connected to Hitler but after reading through I understand the connection. It is ultimately asking why do we listen to people who are in charge? Why do we do what people tell us? Why are we so obedient? It related to the Nazis doing what Hitler said because he was in charge and was their leader and according to this study we listen to those in charge. We follow along and do as we are told. When we are younger we listen to our parents who tell us to listen to our teachers, We listen to our teachers because Our parents tell us to do so. Our teachers tell us to listen to the principal because and we do so because the teacher told us to and our parents told us to listen to our teacher and so on and on it goes. We keep listening to people that seem in charge, we are told to listen to the person training us in a new job who tell us to listen to the boss and the boss is how we keep our jobs and make money to support ourselves and families and so we do, our boss tells us to listen to customers so we do cause of the chain once again. We then have wives that we listen to cause our parents tell us so to tell our kids to listen to your dad and we tell our kids to listen to their mom and it is a never ending cycle of listening to those we think we have to listen to.
This photo is from Fargo, a show on fx and this season was about mob bosses. They all listen to the bosses out of fear of being killed because they were unpredictable and wild and took out anyone who threatened their titles and role as in charge. Maybe that's why the people in the experiment listened because they were getting paid and yes they were told that they would get the money either way but most times we don't get paid if we don't finish a job.

The factors that might discourage the unionization of fast-food workers are that many workers are younger children under the age of 18. These workers are unable to work certain hours because of school and curfew that the city allows. Not all of them work a set amount of hours and are not always able to. The workers in school also might not be working a set amount of hours to be able to unionize. The factors that might encourage unionization are that there are many employees all over working in these fast-food chains. That also could hurt the fact that many people are willing to work in these locations because they can go from place to place and job to job if they move but that also could be a push for unionization.

Right off the back when reading this knowing the history that surrounds it, it hurts to read about a child being told where to drink water from, how do you describe to a child that they are different, seen different, treated different just because they are a different color. It is horrible to read and to think about, him thinking the color of the water would be colored and not white must have been the start of his disappointment. For page to with to be white must have been awful for his parents to hear because they know why he means it but not why he should wish it. We shouldn't wish to be something else just to get places and to be able to do things. Having a place to go that is divided is awful because you know that some of these things are not offered on both sides such as this amusement park. "Don't be showin' yo' color" what an awful thing it must have been to hear and know what it meant to not act out and let others think you are bad based on skin tone. Race is a difficult subject because we are define ourselves differently than we should be reported on documents for the government, they have an idea of what we should put of what they want us to put down even if we don't identify that way. It is a scary thought Page must face about the fear his son will be seen as a menace just because of his looks.

The fear Ezekiel must have felt when he had the interaction with the member trying to provoke him about not having a use for a jew must have been so scary and as if what he was doing was getting to that man. He was studying their movement and the things he describes are hard to read such as the music they were listening to and the things they said. It is hard to know that there are still people out there who feel this way and who think that is okay to do or say about other people. to have seen this group of men all belonging to a Klan must have made him fear for his safety in that area in the dark while they all showed what they belonged to and how they felt. Reading things such as these makes me sad to know the fear people still must live with in this day and age and how all people of all types are target by someone is awful.

When reading this chapter I immediately thought of Shaq, He is a great businessman, he has his hand in so many deals all around. I see him involved in footwear, cruise lines, pizza shops, medicines, car insurance, clothing lines, charities and many other organizations to help children and communities that need assistance. As an athlete he was always a bigger child and he didn't have things such as bedding and shoes that were of easy access for someone his size and he helps children that are also in the same situation because he knows its difficult to find beds that are the size of a tall child or shoes that would fit a size 13 and up, these are also things that can be costly and not every family might be able to afford. In the novel "The Book Thief" I believe it is the young boy paints his face a darker color to pretend he is Jesse Owens because he is a great athlete, he is punished for it because at the time it was not okay to want to be a person of color. We all know the discrimination athletes faced when trying to first play sports such as Robinson and still players feel mistreated due to race.

What is race? What does it mean to say that race is socially constructed?

After asking people to answer these questions I feel race is different to everyone, some see it as what they are told what race they are. They also see it as what society tells them they are and lastly what race they feel they are. I think it means that to say race is socially constructed means that race is shaped by society and how they define it and what box we need to be checked into. Some races don't have a box still they are lumped with another race.

1. I am white

2. I know because based on my appearance, I look white

3. I learned what race I am based on the forms you fill out when they ask you what race you are in things like questionnaires. Since latinx is not considered a race, and I can pass as white,

It made most sense to put white.

4. I decide what race other people

Are based off their appearance

5. People also decide my Race based on appearance because I have had people think I am only white .

1. White 2. I know bc my biological family members/ancestors are also that race and my appearance matches it- I did not make a decision bc I match my race. 3. I learned what race I am from my family members- parents and grandparents. One of my early memories involving race was growing up. My neighbors were afghani and I grew up thinking (and telling people) I was afghani bc I looked like them and called their grandma my grandma (I’m not afghani). After 9/11 my parents had to explain to me that it was dangerous to tell people me/my “grandma” and other neighbors were from Afghanistan because other people may try to hurt them because of that. 4. I usually decide other peoples race by the way they look or ask them what race they are if it comes up. 5. In my experience most people tend to think I am middle eastern or Mexican. It changes with the group I am with- if I am with Latinx looking people it’s assumed I’m also Latinx. If I’m with my hijabi friends most people assume I am middle eastern bc they tie Islam to the Middle East.

1 I am Latino

2When I hear Latino I think of someone that is from a country in Latin America. I was born in Mexico and lived there until I was 4 years old.

3 I think the way that I learned what race I was was when my parents would fill out paperwork for school or if I needed to go to the doctors. I remember them checking Hispanic/ Latino. One of the first messages I received about race was when I was in first grade. Up to that point the preschool I had attended and in kindergarten it was majority Latinos. The town where I grew up is majority white and Latino. In my first grade class there was a student that was African American and also an Asian student. Up to that point all I had seen was white or Latino people.

4 The way that I decide what race other people are is by the way they look. That can be the color of their skin or any other trait that I can pick up on.

5 From the experiences that I have had I think it is difficult for people to decide what race I am when they first meet me. A lot of people think that I am Asian, maybe because of the shape of my eyes. When I talk in Spanish or I tell them I am not Asian they are surprised.

1. Hispanic 2. My parents told me 3. My parents and when someone spoke spanish 4. what they tell me they are. 5. Me telling them what race I am

1. White 2. My skin tone and society telling me what I am 3. my family told me I saw other kids who looked different 4. I ask them if they speak another language 5. They ask me when they hear me speak another language.

1. Hispanic 2. My mom said I was since she and my dad are
3. I asked my parents when I heard my grandma speak spanish and I didn't understand
4. I ask then, they look different or eat different things
5. They assume what I am by my skin tone

My mom started to clean up my knee and put a bandaid on when my dad told me to stop crying and man up. He explained to me that men don't cry and I needed to stop it or I would be called a wimp by others. This was something that stayed with me as time went on and It also carried into other situations where I feel sad but I don't cry because as a man I don't want to be looked at as a weak man for showing emotion.

When you go into target toys are separated into a few categories, it starts babies then toddlers then girls and boys. In these areas toys are also separated by categories, girls legos, boy legos. Boys action Figueres, girls dolls. They are separated by isles so the girl toys are in 3 or so isles and boys toys are in 3 or so isles to. The girls and boys legos could be together but they are seperated. Then puzzles and board games are all together because they seem to be for ages above 12 and don't get put into isles with gender toys. The isles seem to be separated by colors the girls isles are pinks and reds and the boy isles are blue and green and the photos on the toys show boys or girls playing with them. I think there are gender neutral toys such as puzzles and clay as long as the photos are not of a princess or a truck. I think kids can play with either toy but they are still targeted at one gender. Video games can also be neutral because you can play as several characters in games such and mario or princess peach.

I went onto Vogue.com and on the site there are many articles that have photos on then with a small caption under it. I had to scroll down to see around the 50 images but when I did I counted around 8 men compared to around 63 women. In this line there was a nice mix of race of course I am just guessing the race because I don't know for sure. I counted around 20 African American women, 3 African american men, 9 Asian women, 2 Asian men, 5 Hispanic women, no hispanic men, and around 26 White women and 5 White men. The only person that was not "skinny" was one and that was a pregnant women. All the other men and women seemed slim. What I can draw is that Vogue still seems to show "skinny" and "healthy" men and women. These are the top stories so maybe if there was no stories about any one that has a bit more visible body fat then it could be they choose not to put those stories or there were no stories about them.

When I first started reading this I immediately thought of gender reveals. The parents pop a balloon, shoot some gun that has confetti, they break a pinata that drops ball colors, they even use cake colors on the inside all to find out what the sex of the baby is before it is born, blue for boy and pink for girl. Before the baby is even born it already is told its gender and what color it will wear based on the gender color that assigned to its sex. Such as the toy activity we see which toys are told they are for boys and which for girls. Us boys are given trucks, guns and anything maybe the color blue or green such as a ball or kite. This also determines what toys we play with based on the color the same color that has been decided is a boy color. That is also what makes us feel girls can't play with us because they are girls and we are boys, our toys are not for them because they are blue. It's as if we are taught to avoid the opposite sex because it's not the one we are told we are, even when we learned about our bodies changing the girls are taught about their stuff and us about ours, we all wanted to know what the girls were taught but we weren't because it wasn't about us and the school didn't think we needed to. There are many times when I am told to be man or to do certain things because that is what a man does but why because the men before me did it? Or because it's easier to keep these manly traditions going such as taking out the trash or killing a spider or fixing the cars.

In movies they make the cheerleaders the pretty and popular girls of the school. These are the girls who are so pretty and always happy and smiling, always well done up such as nice hair and makeup. On days when football games happened the cheerleaders were always ready and dress in uniform all day, they would have glitter on their eyes and hair and makeup fully done at 8 am in the first class of the day. In the movie bring it on that's also the case, they need to find a new girl to cheer and they make it clear they want someone without tattoos who can do the dances but is also pretty and will fit in with the rest. These girls are running and jumping and doing flips and must be tired but are expected to be smiling during all of this for what reason other than to show they are pretty? This never made much sense to me but girls are taught much different things then boys growing up. Of course we are attracted to girls who take care of themselves just as girls like guys who have nice haircuts and don't dress sloppy, I feel we all want someone who takes care of themselves and puts effort even if that doesn't fit the same standard for everyone. I'm not saying I want a girl who is always ready to go to a prom but maybe one who things she looks good enough to go places at a moments notice. After reading this it seems that girls also fear they don't look the best at all times and want their friends to tell them if they do or not. THe parts about the pageant seem really mean and that's awful girls feel that way and go through those things. It seems that girls are taught to be pretty and men are taught to be tough but its hard when we don't feel tough and I feel it must be hard when these girls don't feel pretty.

As more and more things come out and we learn more things I now have a better understanding of the meaning of sex and gender but they are always changing as we learn more about the way people like to be identified and what they liked to be referred to as and how we can be considerate as we talk to new people. When I was younger we were not taught about boys and girls wanting to be the opposite or dress differently, it wasn't until the end of high school that I knew anyone who wanted to or was transitioning. It was a hard and fast change when I started to realize it then it was more common and we could learn more about it, now I have more knowledge to explain these things to my younger cousins who have questions about the topic and if I don't know the answer I can look it up and search for answers. When I read about the terms used I feel that when I was younger I would repeat words I heard by older men because I thought if the adults can say it then so can I because they didn't tell me words such as gay was a bad word to use as an insult because I would hear uncles use it as an insult. Kids repeat things they hear and they are not always told not to say these things until they say it and someone catches it and tells them otherwise. Playing tag or choosing teams for any games was a time to point out who you liked when you were younger but you didn't want it pointed out or made attention to because ti seemed wrong until you knew if the girl liked you back and maybe that's why we hide our feelings because of rejection or fear and that can also be why kids who want to express their feelings' don't because they are worried it won't be given back. And this must be an even stronger case for a child who likes the same sex or the opposite or wants to transition to be with the same or opposite sex. This part has given me a lot to think about how I made decisions when I was younger and now I realize that some kids I played with might have had feelings for the same sex.

When I was growing up my dad told me to always own up to mistakes because that was what a man did but he also told me to never take the fall for anything I didn't do because it wasn't my fault and I shouldn't get involved where I didn't belong. It has always seemed that girls are told to apologize and make things right even if it doesn't seem they did anything wrong. I was also taught to defend myself and take a stand when I needed to because I shouldn't let anyone insult me so I was to stand my ground and I have been in a fair share of fights because of this and because me and the other guy might not have talked it over but once I felt insulted I needed to take a stand as I was taught to because that's what men do and I would see guys fight to show the other guy they weren't weak or defenseless. I was also told not to take things seriously and that joking is just good fun and we all do it even if it seems mean because that can be the funniest of jokes but my mom didn't like mean jokes and always made it clear that it wasn't okay to be mean even if joking to someone. There was lots of times my mom didn't agree with my dads teachings but some things she was harder on then others but that's because she was incharge of girls and my dad was incharge of boys so it wasn't her area to my dad to say much to me. But maybe it shouldv'e been both of them mixing it up becuase then maybe if all parents did this then men adn women wouldn't seem so divided in areas such as fighting and sorrys and thanks you and compliments.

I understand that people want to see pretty people on tv so the new cast is always pretty but I also want the information no matter who gives it to me. My parents watched the same news channels all my life and still do because it was the time that they could watch in a language they understood, it wasn't about the appearance of the people but the convenience for them and I followed along, I get new updated on my phone that's written or told in a matter of minutes to update me. It's not about the looks but the information in a way that best suits me. That's not always true for movies that are fiction cause I love to see a pretty girl that I like in several movies. And I think we have all been guilty of wanting to be in a group of girls or even with the prettiest girl but we don't all have the same type of pretty.

I have heard awful stories of how women are treated in the Military and the things that happen to them, they are assaulted, beaten, if they are an officer they are mocked and harrased and it's so hard to hear this happens by the men and women who are suppose to be out their protecting us while hurting others. After reading this sections and how these men think women use equality to advance personal interest is why it is so hard for women to advance in places. I am studying to be a police officer and male or female captain I will respect them because they are my hire ups not just because they are ahead in their career because they feel they need to be but because they put in the time and effort to do so. Women getting pregnant should not be used to look down on them but to maybe respect that they are still out there on that field while pregnant and doing both.

(JCB) Chapter 8. White Wedding: Marriage, Family and Heteronormativity.

I always thought some girls got married to guys just to have this huge wedding. It seems wrong but I have thought this because they still talk about their wedding like it was the most amazing thing but they don't seem to talk about their marriage. It seems that all girls are told to get married by a certain age before they get too old or no one is left for them to marry. Us boys seem to be told to get married when we feel it's time for us to slow and settle down. When we can finally provide for a family and are ready to only have one girl in our lives. There is definitely some sexism there but its changing as time goes and from my parents it was the same for both luckily, marry when you are ready not when you think you have to be ready. No one wants to get divorced, we don't plan to marry to divorce so we want to plan the best option and partner. In shows its always they get married then boom they have kids, like they go hand and hand even for couples who adopt such as in "Modern Family." In this show they adopted before they could legally be married but they knew they were together for that reason to be married. The grandpa on that show is also in "Married with Children" another show that is married then kids boom, go together it's even in the theme song that you can't have on without that other. Shows have come along way since families started to change and look different and they are being represented better such as families that are mixed races or not just all white families on tv. Shows like Desperate Housewives that my mom watches are about women who seem to stay home all day while their husbands work and they take care of the kids and house, this show is from the 2000s but it still seems a little behind for its time mindset wise. Same-sex marriages had to be fought for which is awful because why couldn't you marry the person you wanna be with. I can see how men had to start to dream of a wedding in a same-sex marriage since the women usually thinks of the ideas and dreams of the wedding in a heterosexual wedding. Weddings are so expensive and I know why because we need businesses to happen from the industry but it seems crazy. Why spend thousands to get a paper that tells the world me and someone else love each other so much we are stuck legally. Why can't we have a reasonable party to get this across. If girls didn't dream of weddings and have years to plan then maybe they wouldn't be so expensive but no its expensive cause it seems to be a competition of whos is best. There are so many shows about weddings, locations, dresses its crazy.

I have honestly never fantasized about my future wedding. I never was sure if I wanted to get married honestly and because of this I never thought about having a huge wedding that seems expensive for no reason. I think the "white wedding" dream doesn't appeal to me because I don't see the need for the big party, yes they are fun to go to and all but some things about it seem unnecessary such as the huge cake that isn't always good or the flowers on the tables. It doesn't have to do with my role of class or race because in my culture we go for the huge weddings including a big church with the big party. My gender might have to do with it because boys don't usually think about having big weddings when we are little like girls do. If I decide to get married and my future wife wants to have a huge wedding it would need to be a conversation about where we spend on this wedding because I will be willing to spend on some parts such as food and good cake but things like flowers and the location maybe not.

The American family looks very different with each family is interacts with. I hardly know any two families that are so similar. Some have families that are married, some divorced, spererated, remarried, widowed. Then in those we have one parent who works, both who work, only the mom, only the dad, both work 1 job, both work 2, one works 2 and the other none. It is always so different as the circumstances are different and they are all still families no matter how different. The house roles have changed since the 50's when the man would work and the women stayed home to take care of the kids and get things done. Now some men stay and the women work or both work which is the most common thing now since it's hard to support families these days with only one job in the household. Having kids while not married is also a new item, either the child is with both parents unmarried or with only one no married. There are all types of differences as times have changed.

I was at buffalo wild wings, there was a couple a few tables over that were yelling at each other. The norms being broken were yelling very loudly in a restaurant. I know these norms were there because it is something no one usually does and that's why it seems weird to me. The there to me is breaking a norm that is usually frowned upon by people or we are told not to do something. A waitress walked over and told the couple to please quiet down. It seems a bit normal for this to happen because the coupler was younger and it was hard to tell their race but they seemed hispanic. They looked very well dressed so I would assume upper middle class. The only situation that this might be normal if the couple was yelling for help but nothing else would make this normal. I would be embarrassed for others to know my business because I was yelling it out in a restaurant such as this couple was. I can't imagine a situation where I would be behave similarly and not think its not weird. It affected the situation because I immediately realized it was weird because it took me by surprise to hear the yelling. The label was associated in my head as soon as I realized the situation.

The movie "Alive" was the first thing I thought of when I read the title of these pages. I don't think of the Donner party much because I have heard so many things that they didn't eat people like the story goes. As I started to read I then realized the story is about the story that was used for the book that the movie "Alive" is based on. Yes the norm would've been to survive and not eat people but they did what needed to be done to stay alive at this point. Eating not only a human but that human being a very close friend and teammate is even harder. Eating the marrow seemed the weirdest because it is having to go deeper and cute and crack even further to get it out. Yes as the circumstances changed and that's why they did what they needed to but it's so hard to read and think about. The norms that they developed helped to provide a sense of normalcy in the unnormal things they were doing and as things change it seems normal to set these norms up.

I would not be strong enough to last those 37 months in this concrete nothing of a floor and toilet being treat unhuman like. If someone goes to jail and comes out reformed and is still treated badly I feel mixed feelings based on the crime committed and the sentencing. But this type of treated seems wrong overall and takes away the human rights in my opinion. I watch many movies and reading the part of how the prisoners are started into the system remind me of the movie "Shawshank Redemption" and in this film is talks about men being raped and forced into things they didn't want to do. I also viewed the film about this experiment called "The Stanford Prison Experiment" these men were mock guards and prisoners and after a few days they took the jobs very seriously as if the "prisoners" would never be taken out of jail and the "guards" acted as if they could treat these men any way they could because they held some power. It was hard to watch because it seemed so easy for these men to forget the truth, their reali roles in life and that they were not really in this prison. The labels put on these men actually got to them, their minds believed that this might be real and true and not an experiment. Reform is something that would change the way things are done and the system is treated. If we all went through an experiment like this we would understand the need to change and make sure the prison system is done correctly for its purpose of serving time not going crazy or being hurt or tortured physically and mentally.

(H) pg. 322- 334 On Being Sane in Insane Places (Rosenhan)

I don't think anyone is full sane, I feel like we all can get a little insane because things can push up to be. I don't like the term normal when it comes to mental health because then it means someone is doing something that someone else says is not normal when it's just a sickness not their fault. People can say act normal meaning stop doing that thing you are doing and act the way you should act when you don't feel you did anything wrong in the first place. Labels are things people usually try to get away from or want to create a new label because the ones already set don't match them or properly label them the way they should. Labels seem to be changing overtime as we in society understand the new labels we need to create as we discover things. Labeling and depersonalization can be ineffective because of the wrong labeling given to someone. As Rosenhan states " we cannot distinguish insanity from sanity" is the best way to describe it. Distinguish is the key word I think that makes me think about this so much because it can be hard to tell when someone needs time to feel back to healthy and when someone needs more help to get healthy that might require work or even medication. Medication is not always the solution but in some cases it can work. This was hard to read because I know friends who are not mentally healthy and the labels seem to be the hardest part for them to hear. Normal is one that usually hurts the most. When I wrote about the couple in wild wings I Know see how it seems insensitive to speak that way.

As someone in the academy I see how we are taught to act in a split second on our instinct on if we are in danger and how to handle the group or man or woman to see what is the best step. I also understand that there are moments that don't need to occur because some feel that they can do what they feel because they are protected in some way. And the end of all of the training it is still us alone in a split second that is being charged or needs to charge for some specific reason. I have yet to encounter this situation but I know it will always be difficult to gage what to do when that moment occurs. The men teaching me don't tell us to beat anyone but they make it clear to us that we are going to be put in dangerous situations and it won't matter what we are taught because our own instinct will kick in and we can stop the urge to fight and try to detain but our instinct will appear.

Kindergarten is the first time most kids play with other children outside of the home. Preschool use to be very expensive when I was younger and I didn't go to preschool and neither did a lot of kids my age. Now it seems like most people send their kids to preschool or some daycare that teaches them things like they would learn in preschool. Kids start to understand that they are in a room learning for a few hours and they have to listen to a teacher instead of their parents. Gracey is right that kindergarten is to teach us how to be students. Kindergarten does teach routine and being use to having to follow a schedule because we don't play all day, we have a schedule and we start to learn what that is like. While reading this I hoping to read more about the spooky house and where and what it was because the teacher seemed to know nothing about it. The children's routine seemed odd and not even much like any school day I've heard of. I wasn't aware kids took naps at school, I don't know any kindergartens that do. The teacher seemed to be teaching the children some very patriotic things it seems. That also seemed odd especially the show and tell with the pistol and how they just say they can't have it but the child doesn't seem to be punished or parents called. I agree that many things from the day could have been used as a learning experience or a way to get the kids to speak out or interact.
