Genre is a french word meaning 'a kind'. It can be used to describe anything from music and literature to film and television shows.

In film or literature the genre is heavily influenced by the storyline and setting of the piece.

Many Genres can over-lap to create a hybrid genre - an example of this would be a dramady, which is a mixture of drama and comedy.

Identify a range of film genres and their codes and conventions.

An example of genre and conventions would be Horror. In horror films, the lighting is almost always dark and mysterious, this conveys the negative atmosphere so will make the viewer feel uneasy. As does the use of colour in horror films, again, they are usually dark and mysterious, as well as occasionally including some red. This connotes danger as well as blood. Often foreshadowing the events of the rest of the film.

In Science fiction films, we would expect to see deep, dark colours, which show us as the viewer that it is futuristic, as well as deep and mysterious characters, who often have a mission or a job to do with space.

Romance films are often soft - soft lighting, soft, relaxing music, soft slow moving camera angles, as well as characters who are loveable and hardly ever shown in the shadows. This shows the positive atmosphere of the romance genre. Until something goes wrong for the protagonist, then we would expect the tone and lighting to change the mood.

Action films are very fast paced. This means that we should expect fast paced, atmosphere building music, and quick moving camera shots. The men are often the heroes of action films, with women thrown in as 'something to look at', not adding much to the story, but giving the male lead something to look at and slightly more depth.

Western films are similar to action films, in that women are often put into derogatory roles, not really necessary to the plot, often confined to brothels or saloons in Western America. Natural lighting is common, as are fast paced camera movements.

Comedy films usually have light hearted plots, with characters who never take much seriously. The music usually reflects this, up beat pop music with happy undertones. This makes the viewer feel positive about the film.

Evaluate in detail one genre's codes and conventions and explain why they use specific conventions.

Superhero movies have their own genre, despite the fact Marvel and DC like to think that they are very different, in reality, they both stick to the same codes and conventions.

Superheroes are usually very likeable characters, who almost always have a binary opposite as the villain of the film, a good example of this would be Batman and The Joker. Batman is the clique hero, with a sad backstory, whereas The Joker is a crazed man-man who wants to take over the world. Like Spider-Man and the Vulture in Spider-Man homecoming. Both Bruce and Peter share the tragic backstory which is expected from a superhero film, by using tragic backstories, it makes the viewer feel more empathy for the hero than they would the Villain.

The use of sound is usually very important within the super-hero genre. We can expect to hear upbeat, quite often well known songs in the soundtrack to superhero films. Sometimes this is non - diegetic sound used to build up the viewer's excitement for the plot line (an example of this would be the Suicide Squad soundtrack). However sometimes they use it as diegetic sound, that the characters can hear. This builds up atmosphere for the characters as well as the audience. A film that uses music very well to convey emotions in the characters as well as the audience is Guardians of the Galaxy. Again, showing the similarities of the DC and Marvel universes in terms of techniques.

With lighting, Marvel films tend to stick to the bright often natural seeming lighting that we would expect from an upbeat, high energy superhero film. However, DC tend to make their films low level, dark and mysterious in terms of lighting. This creates a completely different mood, usually in superhero films we only expect to see low level lighting when the villain is involved, this shows us that something negative is going to happen. However DC use low lighting the majority of the time, this keeps the viewer guessing as to whether something bad is going to happen.

The setting of super-hero films, although varies from character to character, is usually somewhere that our hero knows well and has local connections, an example of this would be Deadpool, which is set in new york - where his girlfriend and friends live. The same goes for Batman, which is set in Gotham, where his friends live and he has grown up. Superhero films which are set in fantasy worlds or Space don't tend to stick to these conventions.

Create a timeline from 1950's-Present, of how film genres have changed through each decade reflecting on how they have been informed by current affairs, social, political and economic changes in society.

1950s - In The 1950's society was recovering from WW2, so a lot of the films produced reflected this. However, they also reflected society's freedom from the war, and the fact that society now had more free time to do things that they enjoy. Cinema experimented with 3-D effects, colour and wider shots in order to compete with the rise of television. For this reason genre was also experimented with, more edgy films were created to appeal to younger audiences, and cheap drive in cinema showing short films about romance and sci-fi were brought in to make the cinema more affordable and appeal to a wider audience.

1960s - In the 60's society was very interested in the space race and there were massive technological advances, the genre of film reflected this with films like planet of the apes, showing space and a world outside of earth. Women also gained a lot of rights in the 60's and it was all round a more 'fun' decade for society as a whole, the musicals that we all know and love today like Mary Poppins reflected this.

1970's - In the 70's film became more experimental, and started reflecting how society's beliefs had changed, although because the cast were majority white, black characters were still seen as the token minority character, an example of this would be Shaft (1971). Horror and Sci-fi films grew, and in turn fused together to make films like Alien (1979), these films sometimes shocked audiences with how scary they are, only making the films a bigger success. With becoming experimental came some completely unheard of scenes in the cinema, such as the nude shots in the film Barry Lyndon. These also shocked audiences, but created new boundaries for cinema as a whole.

1980's - Sci-fi as a genre continued to rise in the 80's after it's success in the 70's with franchises such as Star Trek, exploring the idea of Americans exploring space, films like ET (1982) also did this, however instead of making the aliens out to be a confusing race like star trek, it humanised the aliens and dehumanised humans, another film that focuses on mankind's negative traits from the 80's is The Terminator (1984) which showed how destructive Man-kind can be. So did ET. As the Vietnam war ended, America had a massive improvement economically, this truly was reflected through the cinema that Hollywood produced. More comedies were realised due to the success of television sitcoms, such as Beverly Hills Cop.

1990's - In the 90's society as a whole became more tolerant and accepting of minority groups, this was reflected with the films that were released, for example Boys Don't cry (1999). CGI had made massive advances in the 90's and this was also reflected within the cinema, an example of this would be Jurassic Park (1993). Film makers decided to expand the drama genre, creating films like Silence of the lambs (1991) which made the audience think more, as well as scaring them.

00's - In the 2000's 9/11 had a massive impact on films that were released, there were more action films portraying the americans as the heroes and a middle eastern enemy. Superhero films also work with this same saving society dynamic. Films depicted the enemy as more complex, an example of this would be the bourne identity (2002. These sometimes made the audience think more. Fantasy was also on the rise, with the massive success of lord of the rings (2001-2003) and Harry potter (2001-2011) came the Hunger games trilogy (2012
