Asthma Friendly Schools programme

The Asthma Friendly Schools programme sets out clear, effective partnership arrangements between health, education and local authorities for managing children and young people with asthma at primary and secondary schools. This short film describes why schools should become asthma friendly and how the London Schools Guide and this Asthma Toolkit can help.

Becoming an Asthma Friendly School means that schools will have the following in place:

Register of all children and young people with asthma.

Management plan for each child. (note: a school wide emergency asthma plan is a viable alternative to an individual school asthma plan. For young people, the change in routine, time away from friends and uncertainty about what’s next can be unsettling.

That’s why looking after our mental health over the summer matters. The break offers space to pause and recharge, but also to build habits that support wellbeing in the long term.

This toolkit contains activities, teaching materials and guidance to help support and boost mental wellbeing over the summer and beyond.

It is divided into resources to use with pupils and staff.

Hackney Council follows the social model of disability. This means that society adds extra difficulties to the challenges people already face. This is important because it puts responsibility on society to remove these barriers, instead of focusing on ‘fixing’ the person.

Disabled children and young people face barriers in many areas of life. These barriers could be:

Physical, like not having enough accessible toilets or changing rooms.

Environmental, like places that are too noisy or have bright lights.

How people treat disabled people can also be a problem. Some people make unfair assumptions (something that they accepted as true without question or proof) about what disabled children and young people can and cannot do, which can hold them back.

This short video made by Shape Arts explains more about The Social Model of Disability.

Climate anxiety: 21 resources to energise you into action

Fears about the climate crisis getting the better of you? We asked Greenpeace staff what helps them navigate their worries about the environmental emergency. Here’s what they recommended.

A confession: climate anxiety or its sister, climate doom, hits me roughly once a fortnight. It starts with a jittery sense that knots my stomach. Then it winds upwards, wrapping my heart tight, curdling my throat and setting my mind racing. After enough times, knotty sensations and thinking wear you down, no matter what sets it off. I can chalk up this year’s anguish to working in environmental campaigning. But fear and frustration about the climate crisis were visitors before then – and not only for me.

Most of us feel some worry about the climate crisis. 84% of young people worldwide say they feel worried about climate change. The 2021 census reports that 75% of adults in Britain are worried about the impact of climate change.

It’s not surprising that we’re feeling distressed. The climate crisis poses a huge threat to life and those with power seem slow to act. For people facing the impacts already, the climate crisis is here and now. Fear, sadness and anger are natural emotional responses. But they can make you feel isolated and powerless. Climate anxiety may overwhelm us and stop us from doing something that can help: taking action together.

Releasing the grip of climate anxiety isn’t always easy. Finding what works for you might take some trial and error. To get us going, I asked Greenpeace staff for tips and resources for managing climate anxiety.

It's important that young people don't feel judged when this happens and you should reassure them that they haven’t done anything wrong. You should also follow your organisation’s child protection procedures.

You can also help a young person aged under 18 to use the Report Remove tool to see if the image or video can be taken down, and Childline can provide further support.

Immunisation means both receiving a vaccine and then becoming immune to a disease. A full dose of vaccination generally provides immunity similar to that provided by the natural infection, but without the risk of the disease or its complications. When children and young people receive all the vaccinations included in the National routine childhood immunisation programme, this has a direct positive impact on their health and wellbeing, as well as their communities.

Achieving high levels of immunity against vaccine preventable diseases is vital to reduce the spread of infection and prevent outbreaks. High levels of immunity can result in herd immunity, whereby the protection from immunisation programmes extends to individuals who cannot be vaccinated for a number of reasons.

Evidence shows that delivering immunisations in schools reduces health disparities by making access to vaccines easier for all, for example parents don’t need to take time off work to book immunisation appointments and children who are not registered with a GP are included.

The offer of the adolescent vaccines in school is an important opportunity to check that children are up to date with all their routine immunisations and to ensure they are caught up.

People are sometimes surprised by just how painful it can be, and just how long the process can last.

This short video won't take that pain away, but it does have some ideas based on what other young people have said, that might help you through it.

Below the video we've included links to some charities who offer a range of support for young people who may be grieving. You can look at each organisation, read their advice and contact them direct if you would like someone to talk to or need support.

If a child has a personalised asthma action plan they are four times less likely to have an asthma attack that requires emergency hospital treatment. The plan should have information on triggers; what the medicines do (preventers and relievers); how and when to take treatment; current treatment; how to spot asthma getting worse (symptoms and peak expiratory flow); what treatment to take in an emergency; how and when to call for help and how to manage indoor and outdoor air pollution.

Parents should be encouraged to share their asthma action plan with their child’s school and any activity clubs that they regularly attend.

This section is intended for clinicians caring for children with asthma in primary, community, hospital or tertiary care setting. It outlines examples of best practice in the assessment, treatment and ongoing management of children and young people with asthma.

Asthma Reviews

Asthma reviews should be undertaken annually and after every asthma attack. Reviews after an asthma attack are referred to as 48 hour reviews and often take place in primary or community care. Doing a thorough asthma review takes at least 20 minutes and should be a combination of clinical assessment and patient education. The child’s personal asthma action plan should be reviewed with the child and family so that they understand what steps should be taken for their self management and inhaler technique should be visually checked. It is important to conclude if it is asthma, if it is controlled and do I need to change management through asking the right questions and following the steps included in asthma review templates.

Teach children that their bodies are their own and no one has the right to hurt them or touch their private parts.

Firstly be clear that the parts of their body covered by their underwear are private and belong to them.

Now it is essential to explain to children that there may be times that parents or carers may have to touch their private parts, for example:-

a) When they are very young, parents or carers will have to bathe them, but as they get older, they will learn how to bathe themselves.

b) Parents or carers may have to apply medicine to their private parts if the child is sick or sore. Make sure they know that this is something only parents or carers would do and if it makes them feel uncomfortable, they can always be shown how to apply the medicine themselves.

c) A doctor may have to touch their private parts if they are sick or sore, but that Mommy, Daddy or carer would always be with them if the doctor had to touch them there. There is no other time that anyone should be touching their private parts. The most important thing is that the children know it is ok to say “NO” if someone makes them feel uncomfortable or tries to make them do things they know are wrong. Empower children by letting them know their bodies belong to them. There is no need to go into any further sexual or abuse details with young children.

Most sexual abuse occurs either within the extended family or by someone the child knows and trusts. It is very damaging to a child when this trust is broken. They need to know they have someone safe to go to for help and someone who will listen to them and believe them.

For population monitoring purposes, a child’s BMI is classed as overweight or obese where it is on or above the 85th centile or 95th centile, respectively, based on the British 1990 (UK90) growth reference data. The population monitoring cut offs for overweight and obesity are lower than the clinical cut offs (91st and 98th centiles for overweight and obesity) used to assess individual children; this is to capture children in the population in the clinical overweight or obesity BMI categories and those who are at high risk of moving into the clinical overweight or clinical obesity categories. This helps ensure that adequate services are planned and delivered for the whole population.

The importance of healthy growth in children

Growing healthily and maintaining a healthy weight throughout childhood is important for physical, social and mental wellbeing and readiness to learn. It also lays a foundation for future wellbeing, learning and employment., Oral health is also an important part of a child’s general health and wellbeing and contributes to the development of a healthy child as well as school readiness. Children who have tooth decay may have pain, infections, difficulties with eating, sleeping and socialising and may require time off school for dental treatment. Diets lower in sugar can prevent both tooth decay and obesity. Children and young people may themselves recognise the benefits of being a healthy weight and having healthy teeth with some already identifying that they need help to make healthier choices to stay healthy, happy and well.

Schools teach pupils about the importance of good nutrition and being physically fit and healthy to maintain their mental health and wellbeing as well as the benefits of having healthy teeth and gums, this is a statutory requirement through relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education. The Ofsted Inspection Framework (2023) includes a judgement on the personal development of learners which includes evaluating the extent to which the curriculum and the provider’s wider network helps learners to know how to keep physically and mentally healthy.,

Children’s Mental Health Assembly Pack 2026

This Is My Place

Deliver a meaningful and age appropriate Children’s Mental Health Week assembly with confidence using the Children’s Mental Health Assembly Pack 2026. Created for primary school pupils, this ready to use resource aligns with the 2026 theme “This Is My Place” and focuses on belonging, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing.

Developed by experienced education professionals with expertise in PSHE and children’s wellbeing, this assembly reflects real classroom experiences and the social situations pupils face every day. The content is carefully structured to help teachers lead thoughtful discussions without requiring specialist mental health training or extensive preparation.

The assembly introduces children to the concept of belonging, helping them understand what it means to feel accepted, safe, and valued within their school community. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on how inclusion and kindness can positively affect mental health, happiness, and readiness to learn. Clear discussion prompts support pupil voice while maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

Through relatable scenarios, children learn to identify nurturing and inclusive behaviours, as well as recognise actions that may make others feel excluded. These examples promote empathy, respect, and responsibility, empowering pupils to make positive choices in their daily interactions. The focus remains practical and supportive, reinforcing that small actions such as listening, inviting others to join in, and showing patience can make a big difference.

This assembly pack supports statutory PSHE requirements and complements existing safeguarding, equality, and wellbeing policies. It avoids diagnostic language and prioritises emotional understanding and positive relationships, making it appropriate for whole school delivery.

Ideal for Children’s Mental Health Week 2026 or wellbeing focused assemblies throughout the year, this resource provides schools with a trusted, professional solution for promoting inclusion, belonging, and positive mental health.

Please note that this film contains sexual references and you should watch it to gauge its suitability before showing either the full film or the shorter clips to your pupils.

Note also that the full programme includes content not covered by the primary curriculum (such as family names for genitals). Starting with relationships and families, they describe the combinations of humans that can make up a family: mothers and fathers, sisters, brothers, dogs, two fathers, two mothers, foster families.

The programme goes on to introduce the topic of reproduction, genitals and reproductive body parts. It explains that babies start from an egg and a sperm.

It then describes puberty and why this happens, defining it as changing from a child to a reproductive adult and explaining the changes that happen in female and male bodies: growth spurts, body hair, strength, sperm production, egg release and hormones.

This leads on to talking about the feelings of attraction that can begin to happen during puberty, and we hear how they can feel warm, exciting, and sometimes confusing. The programme explains that people can be attracted to someone of the opposite sex or the same sex, and that sometimes (if both people agree) these feelings can lead to a relationship. This may include physical acts kissing, holding hands and, for adults, may lead to sex.

The programme talks about genitals, arousal, sexual intercourse, and fertilisation, explaining that this is something that can happen when a man and woman decide to have sex to make a baby, and that this is the most common method of fertilisation. It refers to being grown up and the role of consent in choosing to start a physical relationship.

The last part of the programme describes the process of IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation), explaining that it is a procedure used to help people who cannot conceive via sexual intercourse. It describes how IVF is used to help eggs and sperm to meet, fertilise and hopefully make a baby.

The programme should be used as part of the school RSHE curriculum, which you and your school will have developed to reflect the needs of your pupils and in consultation with parents. You may choose to use these clips to support your KS2 science lessons as well. Some schools choose to draw cross-curricular links with these topics and other relevant subjects.

You should ensure you are up-to-date with best practice in RSHE teaching before delivering this content.

It is up to individual schools to define relationships education, sex education, health education and science. This may be stated in your school’s policy. These films must be watched carefully prior to using them in class, to ensure that the content reflects their school policy and definitions.

Relationships, health and science are statutory elements of the curriculum in England.

Sex education is not statutory at primary: parents have the right to withdraw their children from this element of the curriculum. This resource pack can help you discuss fundamental British values with your students.

All schools are expected to promote British values and talking about these values can help build your students’ resilience to extremist narratives. However, it’s not always easy to start the discussion.

This resource pack contains teacher guidance, a short video and PowerPoint slides. The video can act as a starting point, as it aims to introduce students to key ideas and vocabulary. Teachers can show the full video and pause at key points for discussion, or use the shorter snippets to focus on particular themes.

Separate resources are also available explaining Islamic extremism, extreme right-wing and left-wing, anarchist and single-issue extremism.

Schools and colleges play a vital role in helping young people navigate the risks of harmful and extremist content online. With extremist narratives increasingly appearing in everyday digital spaces, gaming platforms, memes, influencer channels, and algorithm driven feeds, pupils may encounter harmful messages without seeking out or recognising them.

To help schools raise awareness, we have made available a set of clear, accessible posters designed for classrooms and staffrooms. These resources can help you start those important conversations and include a memorable SAFE mnemonic to support safer online behaviour.

Download the posters below and start the conversation today.

Resources for schools & nurseries

We would always prefer children to have a school lunch which complies with the nutritional standards. However, it’s not always that easy particularly for children who are neurodiverse or more cautious with their food. Our research shows that 62% of children have a packed lunch at least once per week.

So we have created a free resource pack for schools to support parents and carers to succeed with healthier lunchboxes.

This toolkit simply helps schools to direct parents & carers to the expert tips, advice and tools we have created to support them (see below). We do not expect any direct intervention by schools, but if schools wish this toolkit could be used at a parent engagement event.

The toolkit includes a guide for schools plus a flyer you can send to your families.

Across England, children as young as five are moving from play-based early education into a formal Key Stage 1 system that no longer meets their developmental needs. Evidence from over fifty years of research and international consensus from the UN, UNICEF, and UNESCO confirms that play is not a luxury but a critical foundation for learning, wellbeing, and equity. Yet England remains the only UK nation where play-based pedagogy is not statutory beyond the Early Years. Our petition calls for urgent reform to bridge this gap, protect children’s wellbeing, and create an education system that truly helps every child to thrive.

We want every child to receive a meaningful financial education that prepares them with skills for life. That includes building the confidence, curiosity and self-awareness to handle the everyday ups and downs of money as they grow.

The financial education children receive early on shapes how they think, feel and act with money. From understanding where money comes from to making thoughtful decisions about how to use it, great financial education helps children connect their values and circumstances to the choices they make, and feel empowered to make the most of life’s opportunities.
