It’s part of our responsibility as teachers to open the door for our students to become global citizens, to confront them with other cultures, traditions and concepts to help them find their own identity and accept and learn from those of others.

It’s in the responsibility of the administration of a school to make sure that this aspect becomes a relevant category. At the same time we must not be frustrated if not all of them can be convinced. For those who are we have to offer a structure that enables and motivates the teachers to carry out international activities of different kinds. Like a catalyst we have to positively reinforce their activities and try to place them into an overall structure.

Today we’ve learnt about how internationalism works in our schools. It was interesting to have an insight into our school’s international activities. It is really useful, after so many years of international activities, to sum up what has been done so far and what can be planned for the future.

Morover it is really engaging to notice how people react to commonplaces. It could be funny to list all the commonplaces related to different nationalities: Italians, Germans, French people, Polish, Lithuanians, …

On the contrary sometimes people from Italy can arrive on time, and people from Germany can miss an appointment. Can I be less Italian than what I am? Funny question!

The same events or people, are seen differently from diverse cultural perpectives. Cultural perspective is the way groups of individuals see the world. It comes from their common point of view and is shaped by life experiences, values, the assumptions they bring into a situation, and a whole lot of other things.

“Que el blanco sea blanco

y que el negro sea negro

que uno y uno sean dos

porque exactos son los números ... depende.

[…] Depende, de qué depende

de según como se mire todo depende.

Que no has conocido a nadie

que te bese como yo

que no hay otro hombre en tu vida

que de ti se beneficie ... depende.”

Today we could summarize international work in our own schools. We worked in groups considering international work in terms of 1.Curriculum activities 2. Cross-curriculum activities 3. Assemblies 4. Visits at home and abroad 5. Exchanges young people 6. Principal, teacher and non-teacher visits / visitors 7. Exchanges educators 8 . Links with schools overseas 9. Links with other schools in your country 10. Other details. It was not an easy work because we did not always know exactly what was happening in our school, I mean the details - there are many projects and each of the people involved is responsible for different tasks. It was also difficult to remember all the activities (which were done during our projects) that we could have at a given point. It is definitely worth completing the "Audit template" after returning to find out more.

Today we learnt how to lay a foundation for a future internationalising our school. It is really important to find out what is already going on in our school regarding the subjects of internationalisation and multiculturalism. I will do that after I got back home. Me and my collegues from the Erasmus+ coordinators team have spoken a lot about how to find the best ideas for international projects, especially for KA2, but we were always lost in too many, but not concrete ideas. I think the pattern we had a look at today will help us a lot to find out in which field we can connect an international project at our school. Todays lesson was really important for me and helps me a lot.

Our classroom today, with the door to the world, was in Saint Anne.
We discussed the aspects of the internationalisation of education and gained an overview of the basis of international work - purpose, methods, partner schools ... It was very interesting to learn what approaches to international projects colleagues from other countries and schools have.

At home I will continue to work on finding out which projects and ideas are already being implemented in my school and I will support my colleagues in tackling and implementing international projects - our students will only benefit.

We have learned that even small steps are important to get started.
Small steps can become big projects.
