It aims to alert students towards the geo-political realities inherent in Singapore, as well as nurture in them the spirit of friendship and partnership among different countries and different people.</p><p><br/></p><p>2.The idea of a Global Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco, a town on the <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="mw-redirect" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Paraguay">River Paraguay</a> about 200 miles (320&nbsp;km) north of Asuncion, <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraguay">Paraguay</a>.<a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship_Day#cite_note-Articulo_Dia_Amistad-4"><sup>[4]</sup></a></p><p>During said meeting, the World Friendship Crusade was born. The World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and fellowship among all human beings, regardless of race, color or religion. Since then, 30 July has been fervently celebrated as Friendship Day in Paraguay every year and has also been adopted by several other countries.<a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendship_Day#cite_note-5"><sup>[5]</sup></a></p><p>The World Friendship Crusade has lobbied the United Nations for several years to recognize 30 July as World Friendship Day; finally, in 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to designate 30 July as the International Day of Friendship and proceeded to invite all the Member States to observe the International Day of Friendship per the culture and customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="mw-redirect" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_awareness">awareness-raising</a> activities</p><p><br/></p><p>3.Specifically, <strong>the connection between Singapore and the neighbouring ASEAN countries</strong>. Through the assembly programme, students were encouraged to develop friendship and collaboration with individuals from the different ASEAN countries by having an open mindset and appreciation for our neighbouring countries.</p><p><br/></p><p>4.In 1935, Congress declared the 1st Sunday of August as National Friendship Day.          <description><![CDATA[<p>SINGAPORE: The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will sound its "Important Message" signal islandwide on Wednesday (Feb 15), in support of Total Defence Day.&nbsp;</p><p>The Important Message signal is one of three public warning signals and is sounded to alert the population to an important broadcast.The minute-long exercise will take place at 6.20pm on Wednesday, to "remind us that we need to stand resilient and do our part to protect Singapore and our future", said SCDF.&nbsp;</p><p>The signal will be sounded through a network of public warning system sirens placed throughout Singapore.</p><p>It will also sound for smartphones that have the SGSecure mobile app downloaded and are not on silent or vibration mode. The signal will automatically stop after 20 seconds.&nbsp;</p><p>When members of the public hear the Important Message signal, they should tune in immediately to any local radio station or free-to-air TV channel for a brief message on the public warning system,&nbsp;said SCDF in a news release on Monday.&nbsp;</p><p>A message will also appear on smartphones via the SGSecure mobile app.&nbsp;Those who miss the message can visit&nbsp;<a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://go.gov.sg/pws">go.gov.sg/pws</a> to know more about the signals.&nbsp;</p><p>Feb 15 is Total Defence Day, the day Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942.</p><p>Each year, the Important Message signal of the public warning system is sounded to commemorate the day.</p><p>The sounding and broadcast message are part of SCDF’s efforts to familiarise the public with public warning system signals, and to raise awareness on how the public should react upon hearing them.</p><p>The purpose of the public warning system is to alert the public to imminent threats to lives and property, whether originating from air, land, sea or natural or man-made disasters.</p><p>Credits:CNA singapore</p>]]></description>
