O'Brien plays a dual role in Winston's life, his confidant and his worst enemy. He plays the former part well enough to gain Winston's trust and take advantage of this relationship. Faber is only Montag's mentor who later sacrifices his life to save him. Faber himself is a rebel who reads and teaches Montag. Although O'Brien pretends to do the same with Winston, it's all just a ruse to manipulate him

- Both these characters are the personification of the antagonist, which is the ruling regime. Although we hear about this regime, these two are the only ones we meet as readers.

-O'Brien and Beatty are both the heads of a specific department and are higher ranked than the protagonists (their bosses). However, O'Brien is more powerful and less dispensable, seeing as he succeeds in manipulating Winston, whereas Beatty is killed off.

-They are also aware that Winston and Montag are rebelling but instead of turning them in immediately, decide to warn them and pretend to be on their side.
