Censorship in 1984 involved the act of altering history, and the use of telescreens. An example of the telescreens is when Winston tried to dim the telescreen but couldn't turn it off completely (1.1.3???) In 451, they were burning books to prevent the people from gaining knowledge and asking questions. When Montag burns the old woman along with the house full of books, the lady also recites a line from The Tempest.

The main protagonist, Winston seeks to question The Party's power. He is rebellious, and along with Julia. He begin rebelling after seeing Julia at Hate Week, along with seeing the happy prole woman on the streets singing. He rebels by asking questions, and writes in the diary. He writes 'Down with Big Brother' in the diary and hides it from the telescreen so that he doesn't get caught. He works at the Ministry of Truth where he alters history, and throws books into the Hole,where they burn them.

Whereas in 1984 there were no groups mentioned that acted together to rebel against the regime (as The Brotherhood could have very possibly been fabricated by the party to let the people have a common enemy), in 451 there was the group of scholars who rebelled. This was possible in 451 as the govt. did not pay as much attention to the village areas and thus didn't monitor those people.

The main protagonist of 451, Montag works for the fire department which is equivalent to the Ministry of Truth where Winston works. Montag burns the books to prevent people from asking questions and creating inequality. The burning of books was done so that everyone was equal and did not ask questions. Like Winston, he is also unhappy and begins to ask questions.

C. Beatty vs. O'Brien

- Both these characters are the personification of the antagonist, which is the ruling regime. Although we hear about this regime, these two are the only ones we meet as readers.

-O'Brien and Beatty are both the heads of a specific department and are higher ranked than the protagonists (their bosses). However, O'Brien is more powerful and less dispensable, seeing as he succeeds in manipulating Winston, whereas Beatty is killed off.

-They are also aware that Winston and Montag are rebelling but instead of turning them in immediately, decide to warn them and pretend to be on their side.
