Space is not important for the sustainability of our own planet

Firstly i would start narrate a story with two children having a trip to space and ask students what they might saw and then draw their ideas. Each student will present his/her ideas to the rest of the class and then continue the story in small groups. After that each group will present his story in a padlet, or in a comic form to the other groups and we will discuss about how life would be if those things they saw didn't exist.

Why explore space?

To understand that space exploration is also an investment for future generations, with important technological implications for the entire population of this planet, it is important to think that would be required dozens of pages to draw up a general list.

With English spin-off term identifies all the technologies developed for space exploration that were then adapted for use in everyday life.

Among the most important in recent years is certainly the topic of photovoltaics.

The solar panel technology has been used since the first automatic space missions, except in cases where the probes were directed towards the outer regions of the Solar System.

The Russian and especially American agency have carried out studies in important to have a lightweight and reliable technology, more and more efficient from the energy point of view.

Very important to the IT field, where the contribution of NASA was crucial.

The big IT development, necessary for space research, has been instrumental in the massive information revolution that began in the late '80s.

Modern space navigation programs on board each satellite, by GPS driving our cars, to those that allow you to watch television, derived from intense studies conducted since the 60s.

Applications are many in the medical field too : by infrared thermometers developed for in the first automatic probes, to the new materials used for the artificial prostheses derived directly by the NASA studies, the development of diode technology for the treatment of some injuries.

The remote control systems, the same ones that are used to activate an alarm or an appliance with the use of a simple cell, derived from technology developed for the control of probes millions of kilometers away, and the remote-controlled rover on Mars.

Digital cameras have made photography accessible to anyone and that even now equip all mobile phones come from intense studies and research for the efficient recovery and transmission of images from the automatic probes.

Modern tires that allow greater grip and safety are derived from research begun during the lunar exploration on the compounds to be used for the wheels of the Jeep that was used by the astronauts of Apollo 15-16-17 during their mission.

The fireproof material of the fire brigade comes from the study on the construction of the first space suits for walking astronauts.

The filtration systems, water purification and recycling have been developed for missions to the Moon and for the long stays the astronauts aboard space stations and may prove essential in providing drinking water to the poorest people in some regions of Africa and Asia.

One could go on with many other examples including the materials that are currently also in couches or mattresses, the freeze-dried food, defrosting systems for aircraft wings, but I think it is obvious that much of our current lifestyle comes from research in the space sector.
