We get the first true glance at the importance of the American Dream in this tale while Walter is having a heated discussion with Mama about money. During the conversation things hit a boiling point once Walter grasped the fact that Mama was not going to give him the money to invest in his liquor store. In this moment, Mama asks Walter, "How come you talk so much about money?", and Walter replies, "Because it is life! Money is life!".

From the beginning of the piece, we get to know Walter as someone who is intense and very determined when it comes to his dreams of being able to provide for his family and kick-start his own liquor store. On the surface this seems completely fine but, with time we see how rude and cold Walter acts towards his entire family because things aren't working out the way that he would prefer or based on his "American Dream". We get to see how this "American Dream" begins to cause Walter to nearly drive himself crazy, on the outside looking in, its almost as if we're watching the unraveling of someone who wants to do right and be strong, in time, Walter allows this situation to cause him to boil over.

Farther into the piece we learn that Mama has a fascination with the idea of having her own home and as time goes on in the story, we see that its more than just a fascination and that it was always her dream to have her own property with Big Walter before he passed. Now that she has the opportunity, she's made it her business to purchase a home for her and her family to call their own.

When we are first introduced to Beneatha, we see her as a charismatic, witty, strong willed, young adult. From the jump it is made clear to the viewer/listener/reader that Beneatha has considerably big dreams and that she's doing all that she can to go out and make them a reality. Beneatha has various interest but her main goal is becoming a doctor, this was especially unique and challenging because this was during a time where women were typically nurses and because she's a woman of color.

Ruth is presented to the reader as a tired, frustrated, hardworking, middle aged woman. We see her battle to keep things together with Walter all while taking care of their son and carrying their child on the way. But all and all, we see someone who just wants the best for her and her family, we see someone who just wants out of the life that she is currently leading, we see someone who wants more, especially environmentally.

It is clear that the Younger family has faced more than a handful of adversities but with time, we see the family turning over a new leaf and heading in a different direction. We see opportunities beginning to present themselves but in the same vein, a lot of the opportunities stem from the loss of a loved one, its almost like a double ended sword.

Firstly, I honestly believe that they should've waited things out a bit longer, discussed things farther, and collectively come up with one whole plan for the money or even divided it evenly among st each other to invest in each of their dreams or more importantly, whats essential to their futures. But, multiple times throughout the story we are reminded that this family is not used to having money, therefore, it is almost understandable as to why they would work off of impulse and the things that they dreamed of rather than moving slowly and being more rational. Its almost as if as soon as the money was in their possession everyone was plotting on ways to spend it as if it were going to vanish, rather than holding onto it and thinking longer.
